... luxury and comfort ...

Due to a strike of the pilots of Aerolineas Argentinas we had been waiting a whole day on the airport of Puerto Iguazu, before we got the offer to stay that night in a hotel in Puerto Iguazu. It turned out to be Hotel Esturion, one of the best in town.

This hotel is situated on the border of the Rio Iguazu with a view to Brazil and just outside the town of Puerto Iguazu. It is very close to the ‘Tres Fronteras’ ( point were Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet each other).

Esturion is a real four star hotel, with a nice swimming pool, tennis courts and a garden for a short walk. Luxury and comfort everywhere.

In the attractive lounge are some shops and there is a restaurant serving great meals. For just USD 10,- extra per day you can have half pension !!

The rates I mention are from the website of the hotel, because we didn’t have to pay for our stay.

A Nice Walk to Town

The Esturion Hotel is located in quite a nice spot. Far enough out of town that it was very quiet, yet close enough that a 15 minute walk would find you in the main area of restaurants and shops.

A walk along the tree-lined Av. Tres Fronteras, shown here, provided a nice glimpse into the daily life of the town's residents - children playing and adults going about their tasks. In addition to the houses along both sides of the street, there were also a few local stores for groceries as well as a small military base and even the Hotel La Cabana (Hostels International), which looked quite nice.

We made the walk five times, including one at about 9:30 PM after finishing a restaurant outing in town.

Classy Lobby

Unique Quality: The decor of the check-in area, hotel bar and main restaurant was first class. Large glass windows along the front of this area provided plenty of light, and sliding doors allowed access to tables and chairs arranged on an outside balcony overlooking both the parking area and the swimming pool.

The hotel restaurant where we had our breakfasts was located at the far end of this view and the bar is partially visible on the right side. We actually ended up having two light evening meals here by the bar because, as we were leaving Buenos Aires, I had caught a slight bug of some sort that put me off eating for two days. It was so serious that even beer tasted bad! However, it never put me out of action or interfered with our day trips!

In this view, we were waiting for our final transportation back to the airport for our next trip - to Mendoza in the Andes Mountains.

Swimming Pool & Snack Bar

Unique Quality: The hotel swimming pool was very impressive, with a nice view from the lobby entrance down to it's location on the lower level. In the distance we could see the Iguazu River flowing past the large and well manicured grounds of the hotel. The walls dropping down to the level of the pool, as well as the sides of the hotel had a fine profusion of bright purple-flowered Bougainvillea bushes.

A large Peacock strolled around the swimming pool area, mostly keeping to the shade of the bar/restaurant/towel area.

We later found the water temperature of the clear waters to be just right for cooling off after a hot day of touring Iguazu Falls! Also, the pool area had plenty of lounging chairs and tables with umbrellas, as well as a few hammocks to relax in.

I'd Go Back Again!

The 118-room, 4-star Esturion Hotel was selected for us by our internet tour organizer, Ripio Turismo, so we were picked up from the airport by our local tour operator, Cuenca del Plata, and promptly delivered to our accommodations. The hotel is located almost at the end of the streets in Puerto Iguazu, on the point of land where the Iguazu and Parana Rivers meet.

Unique Quality: We liked the looks of the place as soon as we drove in through their big gate in the fenced-off hotel grounds. Nicely manicured grounds, clay tennis courts off to the side and a beautiful swimming pool at a lower elevation with colourful bougainvillea vines climbing the walls. It was looking good already!

Since we were pre-paid as part of the package, we never actually paid a room rate, but an internet site (details below) quotes their single and double rooms at about US$70.

Nice Place and Not Much Money

I found this hotel on the web. Sounded good and cost 125P/$42USD for a nice double with private bath, AC, cable TV, breakfast and a view of the river. They held my reservation, without a deposit (although they did initially ask for one).
The Esturion is located on the edge of town, but you can walk to el centro. No traffic. Nice, clean and quiet rooms. Pool, tennis, large landscaped grounds, a decent restaurant (see Restaurant tip), bar and good service.
It's a large hotel with a few tourist gift shops, a taxi stand across the street, imposing grounds and a pretty constant flow of tour buses going to the falls, Brazil, the airport, etc.
As we drove through the iron gate, glimpsing the pool and the sprawling hotel, I thought that this place might be too good for us.

Unique Quality: This was a pretty upscale place for us. But, fearing hot and humid weather, I wanted to be sure I had a comfortable room with good AC. The room was very nice and had a small balconey. The surrounding grounds were beautiful with lots of trees, flowers and birds.
Don't know how "unique" this hotel is, but it was a lot nicer than the $10-$15 dollar places downtown and a whole lot cheaper than those $100 (and much more) luxury hotels that were scattered around town and in the park.
