IMMEDIATE ADVICE NEEDED? Do I need to take Malaria tablets for Iguassu Falls and bus to Buenos Aires

by 04072511

In a few days I go to Iguassu Falls.

The following links shows that Iguassu Falls is in a malaria risk zone

http://www.fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk/destinations/south-america/argentina/argentina-malaria-map.aspx

In addition I will be getting a bus from Puerto Iguazu to Buenos Aires which goes through this malaria risk zone. But it seems that so many people dont bother taking malaria tablets for the falls. So do I need to take the malarone tablets for the falls and more importantly the drive through the malaria zone

Thanks

No-one here can tell you that. Even if one of us were a medical practitioner, we would not know your personal health status.

You should take advice from your own GP or travel health specialist, and from the relevant websites. The NHS site is reliable and regularly updated. Then you must make your own informed decision about whether you wish to take the risk of visiting without anti-malarials.

Malaria is a killer. Do not underestimate the risk; it only takes one bite.

We just booked flights for next year today, so can't speak from experience. However, having just seen a program on malaria, assuming it is recommended by the NHS, we will definately be taking malaria precautions rather than risk a life of suffering or at worst death. Not only that, but see attached link and the risk of dengue fever. http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/south-america/argentina?ta=health&pg=5

Tour Bus

by Bwana_Brown

The Cuenca del Plata tour company had been arranged to supply our airport transportation and day-tours of both sides of Iguazu Falls, as well as a trip to the Itaipu Dam in Brazil.

Most of our dealings with them was in mini-busses like this one, but we also had one excursion on a large tour bus and on a couple of occasions they even arranged for personal vehicles to pick us up!

Their staff were always very helpful and a simple call to their office in Puerto Iguazu was all that was required to sort out any problems or questions. We did have a tour mix-up on the first day, partly due to our not knowing what the pick-up procedure was and partly due to their driver not reading our ticket properly and placing us on the wrong tour! This was compounded by the fact that no-one but us could speak English on this 'incorrect' tour so it took us a while to realize we were off-track somewhere! Cuenca del Plata sent a car to pick us up and set us right though!

The Devils Throat

Diable is far too spectacular to descibe . From our vantage point we seemed to be on top of the Falls. Here the falls criss cross each other in layers in their fury to spill over he edges. It's spellbinding!

A Beautiful Pool

by Bwana_Brown

Located at our Esturion Hotel, I would have to say that this was one of the best swimming pools that I have had the pleasure of using. Not only was it surrounded by beautiful tropical plants like Bougainvillea and palm trees, but it also was perched high enough on the hillside that you could glimpse the Iguazu River only a short distance away.

With the guests at the hotel away for most of the day on various tours, it was almost like having your personal pool for the day if you happened to have a 'free' day. The condition of the water was great and plenty of lounging chairs, tables and hammocks were available for use.

The pool-side Quincho snack bar had a huge sun-shaded area with plenty of seating where we could retreat when we had had enough sun. It also supplied hotel towels for use and dispensed cold drinks and a good variety of snacks from the hotel kitchen.

For us, an afternoon at the pool made a nice break from the 3 days of hustle in Buenos Aires followed by another 2 days of tours in the Puerto Iguazu area! This view was taken from the snack bar area, looking up to the main lobby and entrance of the hotel.

The perfect base for visiting "The Falls"

by mitscherman

"Small town with lots of charm!"

While Puerto Iguazu may cater to tourists visiting the falls (Cataratas de Iguazu) you will quickly discover that the place has a laid back feel and friendly locals. It is clean and relatively crime-free. Here, you can hire a remises to transport you to the Brazilian side of the falls or even to Ciudad Este, a mecca for shopping enthusiasts.
