Travel Tips for San Carlos de Bariloche

WINES FROM ARGENTINA & CHILE..

by janaina

The wines from the area are wonderful, much better that the brazilian ones.
Better to buy in a wine shop where you can taste the diferent kinds before you buy,it's much expensive than to buy in a grocery store, but you can be sure of the quality of what you bought.

The Black Glacier

by TheWanderingCamel

After the glorious blues of the glaciers we'd seen in Southern Patagonia, the black ice of Cerro Tronadir's Ventisquero Negro (Black glacier) is a strange and quite eerie sight. From a distance you can see the black shield shape of the glacier, looking for all the world like nothing more than a rocky patch on the mountain side lying below the Manso River Glacier higher up. When you reach the morain field and see the glacier's jagged black face and the lagoon filled with black rocks, it still quite hard to believe this is ice you're looking at. Look closer at those "rocks" in the water though and you see most are rimmed with white where they touch the water and their texture is that of ice - and the few that are really rocks have the occasional tiny fern or lichen growing on them. Birds perch on these, avoiding the ice.

What makes the ice so black? Higher up the mountain you can see the other glaciers have dirty streaks in them, but here it's like coal.
As the Ventisquero Negro makes its way down the mountain from its source in the snow cap of the upper slopes, it gathers huge concentrations of sand, stone and volcanic dust, so much of this debris of the extinct volcano that it completely colours the ice by the time it reaches this lowest level. It is an extraordinary sight, unreal and strange - not really of this earth but like a scene from some dystopic world. Fascinating.
