How Much is Too Much?? Lake Crossing

by coconutwireless

I recently e-mailed a few places to get some prices on making the lake crossing from Bariloche ot Puerto Varas/Monte and was blown away by the costs. i had wanted to do the overnight crossing and stay in Puella for a night and here is some of the quotes I got.
US$  140 per person for the one day and add another $138 for overnight accomodations with dinner & breakfast this agency was a little cheaper.
another agency chili side: RATE PER PERSON : US 178 one day trip inclusive of lunch in Puella
two day ; RATE PER PERSON : US 220

Has anyone made this trip recently?
If so did you think the trip was worth this much money????
Do these prices sound like the going rate?
Does anyone have a name and e-mail of a travel agency in Bariloche that you have used.

Appreciate your comments.

Hi Bev. I've also started to gather info on a trip to Patagonia and found out that this crossing of the Andes is expensive; I was told that it costs around $150. I was also told that (1) the trip is beautiful and includes several crossings of lakes, (2) most people do it in a one-day trip – no overnights, (3) no trips on Sunday, and (4) the lunch in Puella is expensive – a price conscious person will better bring his own sandwiches. We plan to do this crossing anywhere around the 30th of January; when do you? --Marius

Hello,

I did the Lake crossing about 4 days ago from Bariloche to Puerto Varas. The price is US$140 or 420 Argentinian Pesos. It is quite a lot of money, but if you have good weather, then it's definitely worth going ! If rain is forecasted, think twice about it as you could see absolutely nothing !! For me, the sun was up from Bariloche to Puella, and that was great. Then, I had a 3-hour stop in Puella, and not that much to do there I have to say... then took the boat again to cross the lake of Todos Los Santos, which is supposed to be the most beautiful part of the trip. It was pouring down, and we couldn't see anything ....
The other option, which is far much cheaper, is to actually divide the trip in 3 stages. Cruise from Bariloche to Lagunas frias, and back to Bariloche. Take a bus over from Bariloche to Puerto Varas, and from there do a day trip to Puella and back. You'll see the same beautiful landscapes for about a third of the price !
Just cross your fingers for a clear blue sky.

We are seriously considering taking the advice of Aussiegrib and take day triips from either side of the lakes on the Bariloche side and Puertos Varas side.
Does anyone h
ave any information on the bus from Bariloche to Puerto Varas?? Is it a local bus any idea how often it runs?
How much the ticket is?
How long the journey is?
less than two weeks to go before we start our travels!!!!!

Travel Tips for San Carlos de Bariloche

My favorite restaurant in Bariloche

by Futuristic about Familia Weiss

Trout is the main theme on the menu. Served smoked as an entree or any possible way you like it cooked as a main course.

Located downtown right across the street in front of the lake surrounding the city of Bariloche. Great view.

Don't forget to visit their food specialty store located a couple of blocks away on main street. Bring home some of their goodies. Smoked trout. It is light, not too salty and the texture firm and delicate at the same time.

Seven Lakes Road

The Seven Lakes Road is a wonderful way between San Carlos de Bariloche and San Martín de los Andes; you will find beautiful lakes, high trees and hidden log cabins. On the way there is a place called Quintu purai, where live some mapuche indians.

"A "Winter Time" Love"

Wow! It's been 5 years since I went to Bariloche and I still remember clearly the awesome landscape and wonderful scenery...It may be because Bariloche is a place that can't be easily forgotten. Located in the Province of Neuquen, this city is surrounded by millenarium woods, some of the higher mountains of South America and legendary lakes. It is usually compared to the Highlands in Scotland or the most beautiful landscapes in Switzerland. I visited the city in Winter, where the snow covers the summits and the ground, and it's so cold you've to dress up as if you were going to the North Pole.
