How to get around Bariloche?

by SarahHolden

I'm visiting in October and would like to hire a 4WD to see the lakes. Where is a good place to do this in Bariloche? I'd also like to drive to Peninsula Valdes on the Atlantic coast from Bariloche to see the whales - any tips? Is it possible to do this drive at this time of year and how long will it take?

You can find a lot of car rental companies by going to www.guiabusch.com.
We rented from a company that met us at the airport.
But driving down to Penn. Valdes is not recommended- it's about a 12 hour trip and in some parts the road is unpaved. I think you'd be better off taking a but and then getting another car down in Trelew or Pto. Madryn.

Also be aware the drop off fee for an one way rental is huge.

Bus travel from Bariloche to Pt Madryn takes about 13 hours. I would recommend staying in Puerto Piramides, the only village on Peninsula Valdes. It is also starting point for whale watch trips.

You really do not need a 4x4 to ride around the lakes. The roads around the lakes are very good. You might have a better view by taking one of the many lake trips available. The main dock in front of the Llao Llao Hotel which is about 20kms south of Bariloche. This is a good link for a web site to learn more about the area http://www.welcomeargentina.com/loslagos/index_i.html

And by the way, very good advise from the previous post not to drive to Peninsula Valdes. You can also check on this area by clicking at the same web site for "Southern Coast".

For car rentals, have a look at www.evenrentacar.com.ar. They have some of the best rates in Bariloche and are a very helpful group. They will meet you at baggage claim in the airport and the rates are allinclusive.
You do not need 4 wheel drive. The roads are very good for sightseeing.
As suggestged by the previous posters do not drive to Peninsula Valdes. It's best to take the bus or even the old train if running during that time.
