Things to do in and around Bariloche in March

by akaul

Hello all,

My iternerary for the short trip to Bariloche has been finnalisd. I will be visiting Bariloche for 4.5 days after spending 15 days on the end of the earth trip from Gap Adventures (http://www.intrepidtravel.com/trip.php?code=gape) and another two days at Iguassu Falls.

I know that Bariloche boasts some of the very spectacular views in the region as well as being in the lakes district, allows many excursions ov the lakes to islands, and nearby national parks.

I was wondering if any people on this focum will have advice about what things are must-see in the region that I can do without a hore car. Physical activity in the first few days will be welcome as we are very fit and enjoy hking, etc.

We arrive in Bariloche at 3:30pm on the 13th of March and leave at 12:30pm on the 18th of March.

Any advice will be gratefully accepted.

Kind regards
Eddie

I would visit the Isla Victoria. You can go there to the upper part to have an extrordinary view of the surrounding islands.
The tour by boat to Puerto Blest and Laguna Frias is excellent. But when I arrive to Puerto Blest, I use to go by land to the Cascada Los Cantaros through the wood, so I dont have to share the view of Los Cantaros Lake with the rest of the 200 people (or so) on the boat. Then, I wait for the boat with the others and descend to the little port for the common departure.
I agree that March is an excellent moment of the year to visit Bariloche.

Day hikes with great views that are easily accessible by busline from downtown Bariloche (in order of preference)

1. Refugio Frey - spectacular hike, easily do-able in a day but stay the night at the refugio or camp if you have the time

2. Refugio Lopez - Quick day hike with views of the lake and surrounding mts.

3. Cerro Llao Llao and Ciruito Chico - Take the bus to Hotel Llao Llao and walk the road then trail up Cerro Llao Llao then down to the bay and back to the road. Walk to Colonia Suiza bus back to Bariloche. Cerro Llao Llao is well worth the extra Kms.

4. Cerro Campanario - nice little warm up hike with loads of tourists that took the tram up. Good views.

5. Cerro Otto - another nice warm up hike that you can walk straight from centro or take a bus. Goes up a gravel road traversing all the way to the top. Again you will see loads of heels and sweaters at the top as there is a tram from the bottom. The short hiking loops that go from the top offer additional views across valley to Cerro Catedral. Alternate route down goes from below the club Andino refugio and drops quickly to the road.

Travel Tips for San Carlos de Bariloche

Golf at Llao Llao Resort

by Frisbeeace

The Llao Llao Resort golf course is very scenic and fun to play. Views are incredible over the Nahuel Huapi lake. I recommend to combine lunch at the hotel with a round at this interesting course. The golf course is undergoing restoration on their greens which will be ready for play early in 2006. By the way, green fees in Argentina are very affordable so a golf tour in the Patagonia is a nice option.

Villa Traful

by balieyes

The Village is located in a valley of incredible beauty, closest to the homonymous lake. Boarded of forests of coihues, in the heart of the Nahuel Huapi National Park, the place is a very interesting alternative. Today, the Village is a reserve for those who enjoy the beauty of the forest and the mountains, the pure of the lagoon and the peace of the silence. The maintenance of the roads possibility the free access , in every time of the year, to Traful Village which presents an infrastructure of small scale that consists in apart hotels , restaurants and tea saloons. The salmon fishing, the trekking on the hills and the nautical sports are its principal attractive. For all these reasons, Traful Village is synonym of Nature.

Bariloche know as the "Lake district" Located on lake Nahuel Huapi, San Carlos de Bariloche is in the west of the province of Negro River.
Its crystal blue lakes, towering mountains and beautiful scenery reminds you of a Swiss-Italian Village.
