Cabra Corral, Posada Terrazas del Lago: on the edge of the lake

by vtveen

Driving along the lake Posada Terrazas del Lago is almost invisible - just a wall and an entrance door - because the building itself is built into the slope. It is a small-scaled hotel with only four rooms, which all have a large window with incredible panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Waking up with such a view is almost unbelievable and a fantastic place to start a new day !!
Next to the reception desk it has a restaurant/sitting room with also an outside terrace and deck.

Rather steep stairs brought us to a kind of ‘beach’ along the lake with a small ‘harbour’ and a dock. Sitting in the sun we enjoyed this Argentinean ‘dolce far niente’ after our road trip from Cafayate and to the Cabra Corral Dam till the sun disappeared behind the hills.

We had diner on the terrace and ordered the local speciality: pejerreye a la provensal (a fish from the lake), papa andinas salteada, ensalada, panqueque de manzana and a white wine ‘Etchart Privado Torrontes’ from Cafayate. A great finish of a great day.

Although a small and familiar hotel we were a little bit disappointed by the service and personal contact. When arriving in the afternoon there was a bit of panic about our reservation and it turned out that our room wasn’t ready. Posada Terrazas del Lago is a family owned hotel and we expected more personal contact; perhaps the language barrier was the problem.

Still I can recommend a stay in this hotel on the edge of the Cabra Corral Lake; having just four rooms a reservation would be advisable.

Its location at Lake Cabra Corral with great views.

Cafayate, Hotel Asturias: a middle of the road hotel

by vtveen

We opted for Hotel Asturias, because it had good reviews, it always responded quickly on emails and - also important for us - was rather affordable, at least comparing with some other hotels in Cafayate.

The staff at the reception desk was correct, but of course more business-like than in smaller accommodations. Sometimes we had problems communicating, because we didn’t speak Spanish and some of the staff didn’t speak English.

We were upgraded for free into a ‘superior room’, which was indeed a nice spacious room, with only a view of a tiny inner court. We were not very happy with that, but didn’t bother too much, being outside the hotel most of our times. We didn’t see almost anything but the ‘25’ metres from our room to the desk and the exit.
Hotel Asturias has a free internet PC in the lobby. It is located very convenient, less than a block from the main square of Cafayate. Although located in the center the hotel was absolutely quiet.

Breakfast is served buffet style with different breads, fillings, juice, coffee and tea. In the breakfast room it was obvious we were staying in a bigger hotel with more guests. Staff here was less attentive and ‘lazy’, which made the breakfast room a bit messy.

All together a ‘middle of the road’ hotel; returning to Cafayate we would try to find a smaller - more personal - accommodation.

Cachi - Hostal Llaqta Mawk’a: decent place to stay

by vtveen

Hostal Llaqta Mawk’a as it calls itself on its website, isn’t a youth hostel (Jugendherberge, jeugdherberg or whatever), but a decent normal hotel in Cachi. We learned from the owner how to pronounce it: “jakta mauwka”, which means ‘old pueblo’ or ‘old town’.

After a quite formal registration we went to our room, which was rather basic, not too spacious, but it was clean and had all the amenities we needed and a good bed. Our room was situated along an indoor corridor and didn’t have an ‘outside window’, which wasn’t a problem for us.
Llaqta Mawk’a also offers a patio and a swimming pool, which we didn’t use, because we were running out of time exploring Cachi itself.

Next morning breakfast was served as a buffet with all kinds of bread and sweets, various fillings, fruits, yoghurt and of course juices, tea or coffee; an excellent start of the day !!

A decent accommodation for an affordable price.
Located very close to the central Plaza 9 de Julio.

Salta - Carpe Diem: nice place with very helpful staff

by vtveen

We first visited Carpe Diem just to pick up our rental car, which was arranged by Silke, one of the hosts of this bed & breakfast accommodation in Salta. We got a very warm welcome with coffee and cake and a tour through this lovely colonial house, which is totally renovated by the owners.

After our road trip through Salta and Jujuy we returned to Carpe Diem for our last night in Argentina. It is located very close to the city center in a rather busy street. From the outside it just looks like one of these ordinary Argentinean adobe houses, but once you enter the house it is a real ‘boutique hotel’ as they call themselves. Communal rooms are nice decorated with antiques, artwork and crafts. At the back of the house is a (small) peaceful garden.
‘Of course’ we were welcomed again very friendly and Silke and Riccardo were very interested in our experiences and we talked a lot about our trip in northwest Argentina.

Our room had a window to a small patio (be aware none of the rooms has an exterior window) and was comfortable, spacious, very clean, had a large bathroom and even an own flat screen computer with free internet access. Bedrooms are far away from the street and are absolutely quiet.

Breakfast is in style of this B&B, which means it is homemade with freshly baked bread, rolls, cake, fresh juice, several teas, yoghurt and fruit, nicely set on our table and served like in the old days. To be honest sometimes it was just too luxurious and we felt a little bit uncomfortable.

Just before leaving - ‘of course’ Silke arranged an exact in time remis - we got some small presents, which will remind us for ever of our ‘Carpe Diem stay’.

Silke, Ricardo and their staff offer great service and are very friendly and helpful.
Beautiful house with a spacious and clean room.
Silke arranged a very interesting (affordable) rental car for us; with pick up and drop off at the B&B.

Salta (San Lorenzo) - Casa Hernández: home away from home

by vtveen

Browsing the internet we even found information in Dutch about this B&B Guesthouse; no wonder because the owners are a Dutch couple Alex en Rijkje. Own language, pictures, nice emails and very affordable rates made it easy for us to decide for Casa Hernández as a base for exploring Salta (city).

It turned out to be a very good choice; it was the nicest accommodation we had during our trip in the northwest of Argentina. Alex and Rijkje are two very warm and friendly hosts, who helped us to plan our visit to Salta. The guesthouse has a pleasant laid back atmosphere; talking with the hosts and other guests at the breakfast table or during the evening with a bottle of wine.

Our Comfort Room was very spacious with a nice bathroom and a window to the large garden with a swimming pool. We could use the whole house - renovated by them a couple of years ago - with a lounge, TV-room, hall/breakfast room and kitchen; there is also free internet access. Everything is clean as it could be.

Breakfast is a mix of Dutch (freshly baked brown bread) and Argentinean elements and an excellent start of the day.

Casa Hernández is located along a side road, perhaps 200 meters from some shops, a pizzeria, a gas station, a restaurant and the bus stop. San Lorenzo is just an easy 15 minutes by public bus and a very nice and quiet little village, away from the hustle and bustle of Salta itself.

We were very satisfied with our stay in Casa Hernández; it was indeed a ‘home (far) away from home’. We still keep in touch with Alex y Rijkje.

Note
When arriving most probably the gate will be closed. We could only find the ‘gatebell’ with the help of a friendly neighbour. You may find the bell on a pole at the left hand side of the gate !!!

Warmth and hospitality of the hosts.
Clean, spacious rooms.
Quiet and nice location in San Lorenzo nearby Salta.
Very affordable.

El Portal de Salta: Salta a 3 Star Hotel

by lacruzdeleje

A 3 Star Hotel that needs a lot of updates; also needs a better service! Parking is not bad for a small car.

Location! Very good.

Hotel Salta: On the Square

by Ekahau

The Hotel Salta, is right on the city square and I had a pleasant room overlooking it with a balcony. The Hotel is a very old traditional place of neocolonial architecture with its huge wood balconies and (get this word) arabesque carvings, period majolicas and a marvelous dining-room, ornamented with paintings of Ernesto Scotti.
The courtgard with its climbing bouganvilleas and pool, is a very peaceful place. With one exception the days I was there it was also the Miss Argentina contest. Fun yu bet Peaceful don't think so.
