Hola Jose,

Check out Andesmar, a rather nice bus company. It is a long, long trip of nearly 20 hours from Salta to Mendoza, and should cost between $300 and $400 pesos, depending on what type of service you choose. Considering it will take 20 hours, I would suggest the CAMA class if the cost is not out of your budget. BOTH cities are great! Be sure to check out the museum in Salta with the mummies! Buen viaje!

Museo Histórico del Norte - history of the north

by vtveen

The Cabildo (old town hall) of Salta houses the Museo Histórico del Norte Historical Museum of the North). It is situated along the main square and is a real architectural jewel of the colonial period. Some parts were done in 1717, but the most representative parts date back between 1789 and 1807. it was declared a national Historic Monument in 1942 and opens his doors as a museum a couple of years later.

We were walking through the center of Salta, but around noon almost everything was closing its doors for the siesta-time. Fortunately the Museo Histórico del Norte was open the whole day.
At the ticket booth we became a leaflet with some information in English and we started finding our way through the history of the northern part of Argentina. It is obviously that the people of Salta are proud of their history.
We walked through quite a number of halls with early Columbian ceramics, weapons, coins/money, objects of daily use, religious objects - including a beautifully carved pulpit from a Jesuit church in Salta. One hall was full of a countless number of ‘portraits’ of likely important people. In one of the patios carriages and an old beautiful car - I think it was a Renault; must be one of the earliest cars in this area - are showed.

In passing (visiting the museum is the only way to see the interior of the building) we got a good impression of this colonial building from the 18th century building. The arched balcony is overlooking the Plaza de 9 Julio, where the two storey whitewashed building has a gallery and a tower. We finished our visit with walking around the attractive cobbled courtyards, which also have some trees and flowers.
