America del Sur Hostel was our first ‘hostel’ ever during our holidays. We had chosen for this hostel in El Calafate after reading some good reviews and because they offered affordable rates. Be aware in El Calafate the rates are a lot higher than in other parts of Argentina.

The hostel is located just outside the town centre of El Calafate (less than 10 minutes walk, partial via a dirt road) on a hill overlooking Lago Argentino with the snow covered Andes mountains in the background.

Once we took off our shoes (immediately after the front door) we felt at home. Although we expected to meet only ‘youngsters’ there were also travellers more or less from our (older) age. A spirit of travelling is present in this accommodation. And it doesn’t matter where, or in the lounge or dining room, there is always somebody to have a chat.

We had a room for two: basic, clean, private bathroom and a great view !! But the hostel offers also other (cheaper) rooms. Our fondest memory is the fantastic crew of America del Sur Hostel (Seba, Mariano, Mati, Ana). They were so friendly and helpful and did their utmost to make our stay unforgettable (and succeeded).
We came with hugs and left with kisses !!

has anyone heard of this place?
I think I've narrowed down lodging to Nakel Yenu and America del Sur hostel.

any thoughts on these or other inexpensive accomodations in El Calafate? I'd really like to spend no more than $50 for two people, and need en suite.

Friendliest Hostel

4bed dorms with ensuite bathrooms, kitchen, dining area with great panoramic view. The free breakfast was lacking (compared to other hostels) bread, butter, jam and dulce de leche

Unique Quality: Exceptionally friendly, enthusiastic and helpful staff.

Fantastic Accomodatin in El Calafate

America Del Sur is one of the nices hostels I have ever visited. It really feels more like an upscale lodge than a hostel. It is owned by three young and energetic people who made a very wise investment in their hostel before the devaluation of the Argintine peso.

Unique Quality: America Del Sur is perched on high ground over looking El Calafate and Lago Argentina. It is very comfortable and clean with excellent facilities.

They can organize all sorts of activities including trips to Los Glacier National Park, glacier hiking and boat tours of Lago Argentina.

They have internet and pleanty of other reasources to educate yourself about the region.
Self Catering kitchen and breakfast is provided.
Private Bathrooms
Hot Water
Disabled Facilities
Laundry Service
Free shuttle from local bus station

Price: About 20 pesos

Hostel with a View

The Hostel is run two young people who just happen to be brother and sister. The Breakfast is
mostly toast & coffee or tea but you are able to use the kitchen and fix whatever you want.
But the hostel is relatively new and with nice clean rooms and is a good stay if you are on a budget . I think we paid $34, however, we booked online thorough Boots n All
