bus or plane?

by jackiebarcelona

Hi!

Am starting to plan a 2 week trip to Patagonia in September and would really apreciate some advice from someone who knows.

If we do one journey by bus, should it be this one?:

Fly: Buenos Aires - Trelew

Bus: Trelew - El Calefate

Fly: El Calefate - Buenos Aires

Thank you

Yes

No, there is no direct connection between Trelew and El Calafate.
It will be:
Buenos Aires > Trelew > Rio Gallegos > El Calafate

Travel Tips for El Calafate

Little details

by andal13

El Calafate is a tiny town full of attractions: a pretty architecture, nice people, amazing landscapes... But it also has tiny details... A bouquet of dried flowers, an original billboard, even an attractive trash can... The picture shows the small lanterns made of wood that I found at La Aldea shopping mall.

Esquilar / To Shear

by elpariente

Spring is the time when the sheeps are sheared , they cut the thick wool that helped them to pass the winter and so they are prepared to pass the Summer hot weather
In the "estancia" (farm) visit they did us a demonstration of how they did the manual shear .(Nowadays they make it with electric machines)
With a pair of scissors they grab the sheep and very quickly they cut all the wool in a single piece

El Chalten - trekking

by perfectly_zen

El Chalten is really a nice place for those who want to do some trekking, camping etc...
There are two main paths: one of them is the one that leads to Lagoa de los Tres (where you´ll get a nice view of Fitz Roy, I guess!), and another to Lagoa Torre (where you´ll see the glacier and Cerro Torre). The first one takes for about 4 hours (just one way), it has some tiring parts (and the wind helps a lot...lol) but it´s doable. There are two paths that lead to a same point in the park and then continue to Lagoa de los Tres....in one of them you?ll get to a water fall, that has a nice view of the valley and of Fitz Roy (that?s where i saw him for 1msec)...you can choose to start with one path and then get back with another...
The one to Lagoa Torre is easier (that?s what i was told) and takes 3 hours....

The city center

by perfectly_zen

El calafate is a small town, and itýs main avenue is Av del Libertador. Walking along this avenue you can find lots of stores, tourist agencies, telephone centers, internet etc. Itýs a good place for those end of the day strolls...
Walking along the near streets you will also find lots of good restaurants, bakeries etc...

Torres del Paine

by oceania26

Torress del Paine (which is absolutely beautiful and highly recommended by me) is only 4 hours away from Calafate. Even if you're short on time, you can take a day trip here! Most day tours leave around 6am and return approximately 10pm and you do get to spend a fair bit of time at the national park as opposed to the bus.

Remember to bring your passport along, 30 USD (for the park entrance fee), snacks and lunch (it's pretty expensive there) and a pen because you will have to fill out several forms because of border formalities.

If you plan to spend more than a day there, you can change Argentine pesos, euros or USD at the border.

The company I went with was Always Glaciers. We were dropped off at the border and then our tour guide picked us and we spent about 6 hours exploring the park. He gave a lot good information and history...his name is Daniel. He will also help you out if you're planning to do a trek and they will pick you up and bring you back to Calafate if you booked with them.
