Oveja - Patagónica - Sheep
by elpariente
La tierra patagónica se pobló y desarrolló a través de la oveja , que se adaptaba a sus tipos de pastos y a su clima .
La carne , la lana y la leche de las ovejas sigue siendo hoy en día una de las principales fuentes de riqueza de la Patagonia

Kau
by andal13
At Punta Walichu there is a reconstruction of a kau, a Tehuelche tent. The Tehuelches were nomads and hunters; the guanacos (a kind of llama) and American ostrichs were their main boar; they were not fishers, because the Lake Argentino has cloudy waters, and the fishes are not abundant. They used to hunt with arcs and arrows, and with boleadoras (stone balls tied with leather belts). The guanaco furs were used as house and cloth.

El Calafate: the village
by andal13
El Calafate is a small town situated at Province of Santa Cruz, at the Patagonian steppe, in the middle of nowhere...
The Province of Santa Cruz is really huge; its area is 244.000 Km2 (Italy is 294.000), and it has only 200.000 inhabitants. The capitol city is Rio Gallegos, situated at the Atlantic coast. El Calafate is 300 Km far from Rio Gallegos; it has 8.000 inhabitants, and it is a really tourist place, because it is quite close to one of the most beautiful places on earth: Los Glaciares National Park.

Going back in time
by TheWanderingCamel
Harsh and inhospitable as the climate of this part of Patagonia is for so much of the year, there were people who called it home long before the first European settlers arrived. They were the Tehuelche Indians, whose own name for themselves - Patagones - gave the region its name. A short drive out to the lake's edge about 10km from the shops and hotels of El Calafate will take you back centuries to a time when these hunter-gatherer people left their mark in the shallow caves at Gualichu (the Tehuelche word for "God") . The rock paintings (photos 1 and 2) here may not be in the best condition (some are fairly heavily restored -photo 3, others are actually reproductions -) and there is no great gallery of work such as is found in other parts of the world, but they do date from 4000BC and form part of the universal mystery of this ancient art form.
Life certainly wasn't easy here - imagine living in a kau, the skin tent dwellings (photo 4) of the Tehuelche, when the wind was blowing straight off the lake. You'll find a couple of these reconstructed near the small visitor's centre at Punta Gualichu.
There's a very pleasant cafe with big picture windows that give a fantastic view of the lake and where a delicious hot chocolate by the fire will revive you after the walk along to the caves and the kau. They have an interesting small display about the Tehueche and the natural history of the area.
