America del sur Hotel

by hillelarkin

Has anyone any experience (good or bad) with America del Sur Hostel in El Calafate?

Does it suit also couples and not too young? We plan to stay in El Calafate for 3 night in mid February 2009.

Of course, recommendations of other hotels will be greatly appreciated.

We stayed at America del Sur Hostel.
We were absolutely very satisfied with our stay, which was the first one in a hostel. And to be honest we are not 'too young' too, but that is no problem at all. Just make a reservatioon for a double room.

I'm sure you will enjoy your stay (just saw on their website they still do have the same staff members).

happy travels

Travel Tips for El Calafate

El baqueano

by andal13

The cavalcade by Redonda Bay was one of my best experiences at El Calafate; the landscape was really amazing. But I think the horseriding was so special because the baqueano (guide) Martín, a nice boy from Corrientes, with a very special sense of humour.

by perfectly_zen

In El Chalten, buying a map is a good idea before the trekking, since it´s not difficult to follow a wrong path....=)
Anyway, walking there is much fun...the place looks like the one in Lord of the Rings...you´ll feel yourself like Frodo...even if it´s raining...hehehehe

Cerro Frias

by spidermiss

You can take either a day or an evening trip to Cerro Frias' summit by either foot, horse-back or 4WD and followed by either a barbecue lunch or dinner afterwards. On the top of Cerro Frias, weather permitting, you'll receive views of Monte Fitz Roy to the North and Torres del Paine to the South. Ascending and descending the mountain, you can spot a variety of wildlife including guancoes, foxes, sheep and hares. When I did the excursion (January 2010), it was raining and cloudly and the views down below were obscure so, unfortunately, I didn't get the views I meant to have got.

The excursion

by Maggies

In general, Argentina is not expensive for travelling. The prices of accomodation, food, transport are pretty low. But once you want to see a specific place like a National Park it becomes expensive. The thing is you can't do it on your own. In order to see the National Park you need to go with the organized tour and of course it costs a bit.
In El Calafate there is a travel agency on every corner and I believe most hostels organize the trips too. They all have the same prices so it's no point in walking from door to door.
I got a package for 130 pesos: an excursion to Perito Moreno Glacier plus a round trip by bus to El Chalten. The price did not include the entrance to the park - 30 pesos and a boat ride next the the glacier - 25 pesos.
