Unless you really enjoy long bus rides my suggestion would be to fly to Mendoza and then take the bus on to Tucuman. There is not much to see between Buenos Aires and Mendoza anyway and the flights are pretty reasonable, normally around $US200 per person with return. You do pass through some interesting countryside from Mendoza to Tucuman so would recommend taking a daytime bus for that. You might find spending a couple days around Mendoza worthwhile, it is a really nice area. You might find this site helpful www.turismo.gov.ar/

If you are going from BS AS, there are several fights from Jorge Newberry Airport. I believe the flight number on Aerolineas is 1492.( but that might be the flight from Tucuman to BS AS) On the way to Tucuman, on some flights you will make a super brief touchdown in Santiago del Estero, but it is only about 20 minutes and you dont get off the plane.
In August of 2006, the roundtrip price for foreigners on Aerolineas Argentinas went up. Bus prices are definately more economical. How much time do you have in the country? If you are there for a short time, take the plane. =)

oops...forgot to add this.
In Tucuman, right on the main plaza- there is a tourism office that is extremely helpful. If you ask anyone they can point you to it, but if you are facing the huge Congreso building, it is on the corner to your left. It has big glass windows, and is on the ground floor. They have information and brochures about many of the tourism activities, tours etc...
On Congreso Street, right in the main center of town is the Casa de Tucuman, which is where the founding fathers signed the Dec. of Indep. It is a small place but filled with history. Also, the park called 9 de Julio is great. Even in winter I enjoy walking around there. In the tourism office they can tell you about the various van tours to other areas. There were many that seemed interesting, especially out into the forrests to see some of the green, and the ruins, but many were long days. (8-10 hours)

I flew into to Buenos Aires, took a local taxi to the bus station and took a bus. Its about a 12 hour ride, but i loved it. The experience of the bus station itself is great, theres a cafe you can sit and get a drink while your waiting for your bus and watch some soccer. The bus ride all though long is incredibly comfortable. The buses here have seats that fold back into beds, they give you a pillow and a blanket. Put on about three movies, and serve 2-3 meals with beverages. I know i was really tired from my flight so i just slept the entire 12 hours. It also cost about 187 pesos, which is about 60 dollars if i did my math correctly.
