The lakes, rivers and streams of Esquel area are populated by diverse fish species in quantity and quality. These species constitute one of the most interesting national and international level proposals of the sport fishing. There are species with sport value, such as Salmón encerrado (Salmo Salar Sebago), the brown trout (Salmo Trutta), the Stream Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis), lake trout (Salvelinus Namaychsh), Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus spp) Perca (Percychtys spp), Patagonic Pejerrey (Patagonina Hatcheri=Odontesthes Microlepidotus), Buenos Aires Pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) and Carpa (Cyprinus Carpio). The remaining autochthonous species (bagres, puyenes, peladillas, etc) should be returned to water alive and with the smallest possible damage.
A beautiful salmon can leave us perplexed in Rivadavia River, the tenacious combat of a “Brown” in Grande River and the incessant itches of the Rainbow in the different rivers and lakes, give full satisfaction to the most demanding fisherman. Added to it, the area is organized by the most advanced fishing administration of the country.
To practice sport fishing, you will need the corresponding permission. This is a personal and nonnegotiable permission that shoud be carried permanently to be presented to the authorities. The value varies every season according to the age or origin of the fisher. There is also a Regulation that regulates the Patagonic Sport Fishing in continental atmospheres, assuring the conservation of the resources.
The permits are sold in the states of Chubut, Neuquén, Río Negro and Santa Cruz and the National Parks Administration. They are inside an agreement that exists among these jurisdictions and they have total reciprocity and validity in all the Patagonic atmospheres where the practice of the activity is allowed.
The sport fishing is only practiced with artificial lures and in the following modalities:
Spinning: An artificial lure is used together to a nylon line or similar, that rushes from the coast, where the weight of launching is given by the lure and not by the line.
Fly or Fly Casting: a lure denominated fly is used, together to a special live for fly-casting also denominated “mouse line” through a nylon tract or similar denominated leader. It is rushed by an appropriate cane for this modality, where the weight for the launching is given by the line.
Crawl or Tralling: Artificial lures are used crawled from a craft.
The sport fishing season usually opens up approximately the second weekend of November and stays open until the second weekend of April of the following year. That depends according to each atmosphere. In some cases, some remain open the whole year and in other cases, it can have a slight variation according to the biological characteristics of the water bodies. This variable also implies a “zonification for modality”, characteristic that the Regulation clearly contemplates and expresses for not confusing the atmospheres.
There is a limit of captures per day and per fisherman, a storing limit and places where liberations in obligatory. Fishhook will be used without fin when and where this corresponds, in order to return the piece immediately to water, in the same capture place and with the smallest possible damage. These areas are detailed in the Sport Fishing Regulation in alphabetical listing of atmospheres of the whole Patagonia that facilitates the individualization for each water body.
In the same way, it happens to the areas enabled for fishing from crafts with motor. The Chubut State has an Inspectors body of Renewable Natural Resources in charged of look after the effective execution of the norms and to attend the fishermen.
All act that causes contamination or atmospheres, aquatic or terrestrial ecosystems deterioration is absolutely restricted.
As a recommendation, it is suggested to those who had recently fished in areas affected by the Whirling Disease –mainly in USA and Europe- to wash the fishing equipment carefully to avoid that illness, that does not exist in Patagonia or either in the Argentinean Republic
