Esquel...the main urban center of western Chubut
Esquel is the main city of the Chubut mountain range and the center of services towards all destinations. Its origin owes to the extension of the 16 October’s colony mensuration, taking as foundation date February 25th 1906, when the telegraph service began to work.
The meaning of the name Esquel,, has different meanings: Esquel or Esguel, that means in Mapuche Language Thistle and Esquel Kaike, means Thistle Patch or place where there are thistles. The other version defines it as Quesquelé, voice or equivalent sentence to “quaking grass”, old situation of the ground very well known as Mallín.
Its geographical location is of 42°55’ South Latitude and 71° 21’ West Longitude. The height above sea level is of 540 meters. The city is located on the riverbanks of the homonymous river and the hills La Zeta, El 21, La Cruz and El Nahuel Pan (whose hillsides form an imposing amphitheater), the afforestations carried out in the hillsides and the vegetation of the valley (hat make a beautiful landscape).
Esquel has approximately 32.000 inhabitants, and it possesses attractiveness and services that will catch the traveler’s interest.
Air and terrestrial routes communicate Esquel with the rest of the country and the world. In September, the National Ski Festival is carried out, whose main event is a Tetrathlon that summarizes the different sport activities that are developed in this city, for example, ski, canoe, mountain bike and trek. It has paths for walker and different journeys for the adventure tourism lovers.
Hunt and sport fishing are motivational of tourists’ displacement so much Argentinean as foreigners.
During February, coinciding with the date of the foundation of our city, the celebrations of Esquel’s Week are carried out; in which are organized cultural activities, handmade crafts, walks, outdoor activities, etc.

It is characterized by the presence of cold winters, when the biggest percentage of pluvial and snow precipitations are registrated. Summers are warm, and the occurrence of icy is also possible. This gives as a result, summers with sunny and luminous days, when rains are hardly registered and the light day longitude remains for almost 17 hours.
The region has different heights and relieves, that cause important variations in the climate. Toward the west, the mountainous cord and their distribution give origin to areas with special microclimate. The difference of altitude and the low areas of the Andes Mountain Range, allow the influence of the humid wind of the Pacific Ocean to arrive; although it is only feel in a range of 100 km wide in the west. The average values of precipitations are of 2000 mm in the limit with Chile. As more information, it is mentioned that the limit of precipitation of 500 mm (axis El Maitén-Esquel-Río Pico) takes as minimum value toward the east, for the development of exotic forest species that are cultivated without irrigation.
In temperatures are also observed caused differences by the latitude and the altitude, although the thermal difference is smaller than the pluvial.
The winds are frequent and they present the biggest speeds in Spring and Summer. Toward the north of the defined area, winds from N-NW quadrant prevail; in the rest of the area, winds from the S-SO quadrant are dominant. Toward the south and the east, winds are more frequent, intense and dry. The wind, when the drying increases, acts intensifying the aridity features. It’s present in a large part of the area, increasing to the center and the East of the Patagonia.
