Be sure to go to Punta Tombo to see the penguins. We were also there in March and there were still plenty of penguins to be seen. Have a great time - it's a beautiful place!

We like Punta Tombo also, but it is quite a ride from Pto. Madryn. You will have a good chance of seeing sea lions and sea elephants as well. The rangers at the entrance station at Peninsula Valdes keep up with which animals can be seen and where.

Travel Tips for Puerto Madryn

The vastness of Patagonia

by realde14

Purto Madryn is great introduction to the vast plateaus of Patagonia. Patagonia is a very isolated and lonely place where the beauty relies in the solitude of its nature. If you are interested in topic of Patagonia, Bruce Chatwin's "In Patagonia" is one of the best books written on the subject, full of random little episodes.

Between September and April, a large number of Magellanic penguins come to this site to incubate their eggs, and prepare their offspring for migration - the largest such colony in South America. Couples stand in front of their nests

MORE WATCHING, NOW THE PENGUINS...

Yes my friends, the deafening cacophony of the crowded penguins colonies is an amazing and unforgettable experience. This very special birds are kinds, hyperactives and very competitives between themselves.

The Southern Right Whale

by andal13

The southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) has a lenght of 14 - 18 m and weighs 30 ton; it has not dorsal fin, and the head makes up 25 % of the body. The most distinctive characteristics are the callosities of keratine that it has over its head; some parasites live on these callosities; the whales can be identified by them. When it exhales, a V shaped spout comes out from the blwholes it has over its head.
These whales come to calm waters during their reproductive season; there is a cortége, and one female can copulate with several males, but only one will be the father of the only calve. The calves are born one year later, and one year lasts the lactation; one female has one calve each three years.
The whales feed in colder waters; they eat krill (one ton per day), seeping water with their baleens (parallel whalebones) that hang from their upper jaw.

Puerto Piramides Beach

by Maggies

When the tide is low, the beach in Puerto Piramides gets extremly wide. It's surrounded by the rocks which are made of sand and shells.
In wintertime the main reason to visit the town is watching the Right Southern Whales. The boat trips start here and the season goes from June to December.
