Over 70 miles South of Trelew, this is the largest colony of Magellanic penguins in the world. Estimates vary but it's safe to say there are several hundred thousand penguins here from September to March. They are very docile and you can walk among the nests which are literally strewn all over the area. Also present are flocks of guanacos (related to llamas).
What makes the trip to Punta Tombo seem even longer is the fact that almost half of it is over gravel roads (ripio in Argentinean Spanish). They are at least well maintained even though sometimes it sounds like the floorboard of the car is being beat to a pulp.
After finally arriving there is a ranger's station where you pay a nominal admission charge and then it's just you and the penguins. It's better to get an early start so you can enjoy the area by yourself, before the tour buses from Trelew arrive.
