what to do in Ushuaia
by bean4bean4
I'll be in Ushuaia for about 6 to 8 hours.
I'm hesitating between:
-making a tour on the Beagle Channel
- visiting tierra del fuego ntl park
-going to Lapataia bay
- saving some time to visit the city
-visiting glacier martial on my own (going by taxi) and using the chairlift.
what do you suggest?

i'll reduce the options to glaciar and beagle channel for sure... tahts the most amazing things tyou can see... only becasuse you have no much time to stay... and then take a look around to the city...
pss: the glaciar in first place... the beagle in second !!!
hope i was helpful...
Cheers...

The Beagle-channel is something that will be done by your cruiseship anyway, BUT if you like to see the birds and seals and the lighttower, it might makes sense to take the tour, your ship will keep some distance. booking on the ship is expensive, BUT you also save a lot of troubles : you are in the security area already and the boats start oppopsite of your ship.
For the ordinary cruise you first get a ticket OUTside of the port and then you come back togeather with hundreds of other people and show your ships-pass and your belongings are beeing scanned like at the airport. Most of the ships are reserved by the cruiseships and for the remaining boats you might have to queue !

I would suggest the old prison and also the train at the end of the world, it includes a bit of the national park as well !
Lapataia is out of the way and less beautiful than other parts that are close to the train-station.

I would suggest visiting the chocolate shops. A trip to the old jail is also good given you dont have much time. And did I mention the chocolate shops :-)

I second the jail.
I second and third the chocolate shops.
Since your cruise will go through the channel, you will see much of the same in the Beagle Channel. Only difference is that the cruise liner will keep a bit more distance. Bring a pair of binoculars or a camera with good zoom.
I recommend going up to the glacier, coming back seeing the jail museum, then the chocolate shops. Not necessarily in that order...

My vote is for the Martial Glacier too! During our 4 days in Ushuaia, we went to the Glacier twice! Grab a taxi up to the Glacier lodge, just make sure you have one ordered for when you want to go back to the city too! or you can walk back, but it is a few miles and may take a while. Or you can just walk back to the hotel near there and call for a cab.
There is a chairlift there (though it wasn't open for us) or you can hike up to the Glacier 30-60minutes that i remember. there is also a trail that goes over to the right side (when facing the mountain), for a great view over the city and beagle channel.
I went to Tierra del Fuego too, though it is very nice i still preferred the Glacier for it's views. If you have anytime left, walk around the city and check out the shops. The prison museum only takes about 30-45 minutes for visit.
Travel Tips for Ushuaia
Ushuaia
by tini58de
Ushuaia was founded in 1884 with the purpose of sitting down sovereignty on the southern area. It is considered the most southern city in the world. It is located on the Ushuaia bay on the north coast of the Beagle channel. Ushuaia is situated at the base of the last cord of the mountain range of the Andes.
In the architecture of the city you will see a combination of the original housings made of wood and iron sheet and on the other side modern buildings from around 1980. From 1902 up to 1947 Ushuaia was headquarters of the famous Prison of Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, where the most dangerous criminals were sent. This prison is now a wonderful museum!
When it snows, it snows
by SabrinaSummerville
I was in Ushuaia in February, their Autumn. It snowed and it was wonderful. Wear waterproof shoes that are slip proof. Dress for the cold = hat, gloves, scarves. Dress in layers of clothing as it's warm inside the air conditioned stores but pretty cold outside. It's very picturesque so bring plenty of memory for your camera. That saying, if you run out you should have no problem stocking up. Also remember that in the Southern hemisphere the ozone layer is thinnest here and so wearplenty of sun protection, even when the snow is falling.
Ride a motorbike from Ushuaia upnorth!
by esontheroad
Great experience to ride a motorbike over Ruta 40 from Ushuaia to Salta- you can do this. Not well promoted but an amazing expedition of 7000 km mostly over route 40- also old parts of this road and some side roads into Chile to get the feel of exposed landscapes, high fjords and heavy seas! Or ride it only through Patagonia till Bariloche from Ushaia. LEF Expeditions organises this and allows you to do something amazing- Make sure you can ride well-not easy roads and sometimes flooded parts of the road!
Falkland Islands
by Sharrie
STANLEY is the Falkland Islands' capital. It has a population of 1989 of the Islands' total of 2913.
Stanley also has an airport which was opened by HRH Prince Andrew in 1985.
The airport is about 35 miles from Stanley.
It's the operational base for 1500 British military personnel.
Stanley has almost anything you can find in a British city except ATMs!
Just at the corner
by andal13 about El Café de la Esquina
El Café de la Esquina means "the corner café", and of course, is just at the corner (in front of El Nuevo Galeón). It is a small and nice place.
El Café de la Esquina es, como se sospecha, un café ubicado en una esquina (frente a "El Nuevo Galeón). Es un lugar pequeño y lindo. I had dinner once there, and ate Ave César: a delicious salad with chicken, tomatoe, palm cabagge, and some other ingredients.
Cené una vez allí, y comí Ave César: una ensalada de pollo, tomate, palmitos, y otros ingredientes más.
