The port at the end of the world
by toonsarah
One of the main reasons to visit Ushuaia is as the starting point for an Antarctic cruise. These all leave from the port on the southern side of town. We enjoyed strolling around here and checking out all the other ships – and inevitably comparing them with our own! There’s also a small café, and a bizarre giant penguin which makes for a fun photo or two (see my 3rd photo).
For anyone not taking a cruise however, you need to be aware that you’ll only be able to walk so far along the pier before being asked to show a card to indicate that you’re a passenger on one of the ships, and without this evidence you won’t be allowed to proceed.
Mate, the National Drink
by prymsu
Every Saturday during the summer there is an open air market of sorts on the edge of the downtown area. There are lots of goods and handicrafts that can be purchased at a very reasonable price. While walking through the market I saw one group sharing a cup of Mate. When I asked if this is what they were drinking they invited me to share their drink with them.
Snow walking
by realde14
Snow walking is great fun, especially at night with everybody carrying a flashlight or lantern. The organizers of the trip will provide you with the snow shoes. They will also make a fire, offer hot wine and excellent food. Ask around in the city for people that organize these kind of trips. I don't remember the guy's name that organized the tour I was on, sorry.
the old cargo-ship
by globetrott
This old cargo-ship is stranded close to the cruise-port of Ushuaia and it makes a perfect place to take photographs of the lovely surroundings and the great glaciers in the background.
You will see this ship close to Plaza Don Bosco.
