Architecture
by andal13
Ushuaia has a typical and charming architecture; most of its houses are made of wood, with ridge roor of corrugated iron. Bricks and mortar are very expensive, because they must to be brought from thousand kilometres away. Besides, wood and iron are good materials to bear weather inclemencies. The houses are usually painted in bright colours and have nice ornaments.

Hiking/climbing Martial Glacier in Ushuaia
by luzmaria
Theres a chairlift, so you decide wether you climb through the ski track or take the lift.
When you get to the shelter of club Andino de Ushuaia you find a trail by a brook ending at the base of the glacier.
If you have equipment and experience in ice climbing you can climb the glacier, walk to the edge and see the valley of Andorra, mount Vinciguerra and Vinciguerra glacier. On the other side there is an amazing view of the Beagle Channel and of Ambarino and Hoste islands. Really worth looking and photographing.
This walk on the ice is easy, with the steepest part at the beginning. You must be careful with crevasses, mainly in spring and winter, when ice bridges are weakest.
In case you do not have equipment for ice climbing, you can climb the Black Canyon in the wide valley you see on the right from the base of the glacier after you get off the chairlift.
At the highest part youll see an amphitheatre or circus from where you can see the mountains on Hoste island with its glaciers and the Beagle Channel. This circus was formed during the last glaciation in the last million years.
To return, go back to the chairlift. If you Are not tired you can then walk to the city along the route and thus get some nice vistas of the city and the Beagle Channel.
Nuestra Señora de la Merced -the church of Ushuaia
by globetrott
Nuestra Señora de la Merced is the largest church in Ushuaia, founded by Salesianer-monks in 1898 and it was built by wood and sheet iron. You will find this church at the crossing of Av. San Martín und calle Don Bosco, just about 100 meters from Plaza Don Bosco or 800 meters west of the former prison. You will be able to enter the interior freely and without restrictions during the day, taking photographs is no problem at all !
A casual, fun, cheap place to eat
by wadekorzan about Bar Ideal
This place is located right on the main street, San Martin, so it is easy to find. You don't need a reservation at all, though sometimes it does get very crowded. Locals, tourists, and crews from some of the cruise ships often eat here. They have lots of different things on the menu--I can recommend the king Crab and their pizaa. They also have some good Argentine wine.
