Hotel Sol y Luna: A little paradise
After disappointing Hotel Esmeralda I found a beautiful, charming place to stay:
Sol y Luna is a couple of Cabanas and two houses with rooms situated in a wonderful parc. The subtropical climate contributes the rest. Two pools, a good restaurant and a library with english, german, french and spanish books complete the offer.
All in all an excellent place to relax!
Situated in a beautiful parc, 2 pools, good restaurant, quiet & relaxing place.

Hotel Esmeralda: Big disappointment
This hotel was recomended by guidebooks. Totally incomprehensible.
Service is incompetent. They mainly receive big groups (from the death road tour). Food was very poor quality. Wifi was supposed to be free - they charged Bs 10. No atmosphere. I did not stay over night in the end.
No qualities apart from the view of the restaurant.

Hotel Esmeralda: Not so great
This place is touted all over La Paz as the place to be in Coroico. I would say it's great if you are in a tour group. I went there as a solo traveller in low season. It is NOT friendly to solo travellers at all. It is overpriced for one thing. The rooms are pretty shabby, though some of them have amazing views from the balcony. The "cable tv" was about 4 crappy channels all in Spanish. The "wifi" connection did not exist (which was the entire reason I went there as I work online and wanted to catch up on my work). The hot water did work which was good as there was no heat. When I was there the sauna did not seem to be open, the pool was too cold to swim in, and the staff was downright surly. Besides which they charge for every tiny little thing. Their buffet meals are pretty good. It was not close to town so you have to plead with the desk lady to get you a taxi, which was like pulling teeth. Overall not worth the 3 hour bus ride to get there. There are most likely better places in town... or try Sol Y Luna.

Hotel Esmeralda: Hotel On the Hill Above Coroico
I have mixed feelings about this hotel. The room was spacious with a spectacular view. The dining room and food were excellent (Desayuno = 15 Bs, Almuerzo = 17.50 Bs and Cena 21.50 Bs). All are served buffet style and desayuno comes with the room. The gardens are lovely. There is a nice pool and sauna. There are games and a playground for kids. However, three things keep me from recommending this hotel. First, the toilet seat was filthy when I arrived. Secondly, the owner's young daughter came into my room using a pass key without knocking, supposedly to turn on the porch light. Thirdly, we were watching TV in the lobby when one of the staff came in with another guest and changed the channel, without asking us, in order to watch a movie (BTW, the other guest apologized himself). See also a separate travelogue.
The view from your room and the dining room are unsurpassed. I understand the climate is like Spring year-round. If you want to just relax, this is a great place to do it. I was on a tour but the regular rates for a deluxe room were $13-17.
