Thunupa Tours Hostal: Maybe the Only Lodging in Coquesa

This was one of the more comfortable beds I had in Bolivia (foam mattress on blocks of salt). There was no heating but plenty of blankets. The bathrooms were shared and adequate until the running water quit in the evening (then they got pretty bad). The food was excellent and ample (it came with the 4WD tour). The rooms and bathroom were not as nice as Posada Dona Lupe in Jirira but the location is much better. Had the water in the bathrooms kept working, I would have been very satisfied with the Thunupa Tours Hostal.

Unbelieveable views of the Salar and Volcan Thunupa, and close to the mummy caves.

Posada Dona Lupe: Best Lodging in Jirira

Jirira is not as good a location as Coquesa. In Jirira, the view of Volcan Thunupa is partially hidden by hills and it is a long way to the edge of the salt plain; however, there is a much nicer lodging option, Posada Dona Lupe. We did not actually stay at the Posada Dona Lupe but we did stop and look around on our way back to Colchani. It even has rooms with private baths. The Posada Dona Lupe may be getting even better in the future, since there was a lot of new construction in the courtyard.

The owners were very friendly. Everything seemed clean too.
