Hotel de Sal - Playa Blanca
We didn't stay in the Salt Hotel during my visit to Uyuni as our tour did not include the night stay however we did get to visit it. The hotel is located in the middle of the Salt flats of Uyuni. In our case it was surrounded by salty water because of the rainy season.
Unique Quality: Great place to take photos. The beds, tables and chairs are all made of salt blocks as are the walls of the hotel.

Another Alternative West of Colchani
There is now (Nov 08) another alternative to staying in Uyuni. Lonely Planet in Apr 04 said that the two old salt hotels out west of Colchani on the Salar were being deconstructed and relocated near Colchani. I know the Hotel Playa Blanca was still there in May 06, so maybe they just moved the Palacio del Sal. When we went from Jirira to Colchani in May 06, they were building a new, large salt hotel on the edge of the Salar north of Colchani. The new salt hotel had not opened yet. I only saw it from a distance but the construction seemed pretty far along. I found a website for Palacio del Sal that I think must be the new hotel. There are definitely reviews now for this hotel and they are good. Just realize that it is in the middle of nowhere. Another problem would be getting there if you arrive on the 10:50 PM train in Uyuni but maybe they will run a shuttle. One review said the llama steaks were good at the hotel. It's a good thing because the nearest restaurant is in Colchani.
Unique Quality: Everything is made of salt blocks.

Unique Quality: Almost everything in this hotel is made of salt.

a bed of salt
This unique hotel is situated in Colchani, right in the middle of the Salar de Uyuni, the vast salt flats that give the area its name.
Unique Quality: You can't get more unique than this, everything here is made of salt! That's right, tables, chairs, you name it. Yeah, even the beds. Well, they do put soft mattresses on them and real warm blankets.

a building made of salt
the whol hotel is built out of salt, that means the walls, the tables, beds, chairs etc are all cut out of salt. For this epecial experience you pay your special price...we diecided to have jsut a look from outside, enough to have an idea, besides we didn´t have the time to stay longer.
