Santa Cruz, Bolivia to Brazil

by jamesandpam

Hi

I want to get from Santa Cruz, Bolivia to Corumba in Brazil. How can I do this, ie do I have to fly or is it possible to go by bus/train. I am looking to travel at the end of January 2007.

Thanks,

James

You can fly from Santa Cruz to Campo Grande, which is about 400 kms from Corumba on GOL Airlines www.voegol.com.br/ and they normally have pretty good fares. There is a train that connects Campo Grande with Corumba (departures daily at 7.15 a.m. and 8.55 p.m.). There is supposed to be train service to Brasil from Santa Cruz and the division is called the FCO so you might want to consult the local train station or find a travel agent that can book the train for you. From what I understand it is a 17-18 hour ordeal.

The train is really cheap and really not that bad, although it is very boring. (It is known as the train of death for this reason!) You go direct from Santa Cruz to the Bolivian border town next to Corumba (I forget the name, sorry, it's only a tiny place) and from there you get a taxi to the border and then a bus or taxi into Corumba. It's pretty straight forward. You will probably need to book the train the day before as there is only one a day and it gets full. I did this the other way (Corumba-Santa Cruz) and ended up having to stay in the border town for a day and night as the train was full. Take a good book because, as I say, it's very boring.

Travel Tips for Santa Cruz

Packing List

by Turco

Bring some waterproof package, in Santa Cruz it often rains at the least expected moment. While in the city wear either sandals or walking shoes. In the countryside wear hiking boots. If you go to the Rain Forest bring with you plenty of mosquito repellent and make sure you have your yellow fever vaccine. An antidote against snake poison. All of this can be bought in Santa Cruz. Among the good pharmacies you can find 'Farmacia Telchi' or 'Farmacia Santa María' (they are both chains). You can find all sorts of camera and battery equipment in down town Santa Cruz in Korean owned shops around 'Calle Ayacucho' and 'Calle Libertad'. If you want to develop your films in 1 hour go to 'ABC Color' (chain), serious and professional, plus used to tourists.
