Canto das Águas: Beautiful gardens, amazing setting
My original plans for Lençóis were definitely low budget but after waking up on my hard, wooden bed (I've only ever come across these in Brazil!) with a raging flu, I decided to go for something a little more comfortable. The only room available at the Canto das Águas was the Suite Superior, complete with hydromassage bath and two spacious rooms.
The room was outstanding, good views of the hotel grounds - even in the bathroom. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the hotel itself, whilst being luxury-class, blends very well into its environment. There are gorgeous views of the river.
At the time I visited (October 2001) the superior suite was expensive for Brazil but still only cost the equivalent to a room in a Travelodge-type hotel in the UK (around £40 per night). The price seems to have gone up to world standards for a hotel of this class since then but I would try to stay, maybe in one of the other rooms, for a special night or two should I return. Friends stayed a night on one of the standard rooms and were very happy with it.
The best hotel I've ever stayed at, Canto das Águas would surely be a memorable visit for anyone, regardless of the class of hotel they are used to.
Unique Quality: The thing that stood out were the beautiful grounds of the hotel. Everything is spotless and the gardens are lush, lovingly maintained and full of colour. The flowers and bushes attract butterflies and there are also various reptiles and amphibians at different times of the day - toads come out in force in Lençóis after dusk!
The breakfast buffet must also get a special mention for having a huge variety. The hotel restaurant is a nice place to start the day.
Canto das Águas claims to be environmentally aware.
Just one negative - far too much chlorine in the pool. My hair didn't return to it's normal colour for a while...
