Don't know when it was built, but it's quite impressive to see it dominating the whole bay. When I was in Salvador, they had a salvador artcraft show inside. They change it every year, so it's worth going.
Be careful to go behind it (between the ocean and the lighthouse itself). When I did, some locals followed me to steal my camera. I noticed that and I run.
I have been to many different places in Brasil but the one that captured my heart was Salvador, hands down! I was fortunate enough to live 6 months in Itapua..(spelling?) The picture was actually taken on the island of Morro do sao paulo. If you're thinking of going, GO! Have a great time! I could write an entire book of all my experiences and friends I've made during my travels but I'll leave it up to you to make your own memories. Words of advice, learn a little portugese before you go. The locals appreciate it and it's really easy to make friends....have fun, but be careful.
