In Salvador
by acemj about Marazul Hotel
This was really a great hotel and a great value. Though it's not located in the historic center, you can catch an inexpensive cab and be wandering the streets of Pelourinho in ten minutes. The hotel is actually in an area known as Barra, which is a small beach town with some interesting shops, hostels and a laid back atmosphere. You'll also find a gorgeous lighthouse, which is a perfect setting to watch the sun rising and falling over the bay and the ocean on either side.

Officially Thursday, February 11th, 2010 through Tuesday, February 16th. Then the party moves to Ressaca in Morro do Sao Paulo.
You should probably be planning for Carnaval 2011, though, because at this very late date, it is going to be difficult to find a livable place to stay that is not inordinately far from the action or ridiculously overpriced (even for Carnaval).
With the huge influx of tourists comes an increase in those who see them as prey. If you allow yourself to become incapacitated through drink or fatigue, you leave yourself vulnerable. In any major city in Brazil, you should remain vigilant at all times.
