If you are like many tourist that came into Brasil and their stay visa is about to expire, do remenber the policia judicial also closes for carnaval. Its located by the docks, safe to walk to from the 2nd plano inclinado.

"Marro de Sao Paulo"

My trip to this island was the high light of my whole trip. We stayed on second beach at the Villa Das Pedras Pousada. This might easily be the best pousada on the island. They have a website www.villadaspedras.com.br. The whole island is steeped in history, great sites, and tastes. There are no cars or motorized vehicles on this island, except a tractor use for trash pick-up. Any thing moved on this island is done my man or beast. Early one morning I saw 3 guys moving a small wagon load with beer through the deep beach sand, now, that looked like hard work. It is amazing to think that all the materials required for anything on this island is moved in this manner. If you want a peacful paradise, make the 2 hour trip from Salvador and include Marro de Sao Paulo in your trip.

"Climb t the top of the island"

On my last day, I was burned out on the beach, lol, so I took a hike. I was searching for the old fort ruins, and just kept following the signs until I was lost. A small group was just ahead of me, and soon I local lady came out of her house and offered to be the guide. They haggled in Portuguese and all I understood was the final price. I followed them to the top of the island to take this photo of safe harbour. They was a small store at the top, bought some water, tipped the guide, and headed back to the beach. On this treck I got to see much of the houses that the islands 3000 inhabitants live in. Not the luxurious pousada that I stayed in, but they seemed happy.

"Taxi"

When you arrive to the island, men will offer taxis. As you ask yourself"hey there aren't any cars here". Take my advice and let these guys carry your luggage to the hotel. There are several steep climbs to get from the pier to 2nd beach, and if your staying on 3rd beach it would be a must.
