New Year's Eve - Salvador Becomes One Big Party
by mircaskirca
On Reveillon (the New Year's Eve) Bahian capital Salvador becomes one big party. Although there are parties throughout the city, the main street celebrations happen in Barra district. They start in the early evening and continue until the early hours of the New Year's Day.
In front of the Farol da Barra (Bara Lighthouse) they build a huge stage where local stars perform. Streets are full of stalls selling traditional food and drink for all tastes. Thousands of people, most of them wearing white, are there ready for the longest night. Baianas on the beach in typical white dresses sing, dance and make offerings of flowers to Orixas (Candomble gods). New Year opens with synchronised fireworks at various points around the city that fill the sky with light and colour for 15 minutes.

Bahian food
by realde14
Bahian food is some of the best in Brazil. Spicey and heavy, it will require a strong stomach and plenty of beer to wash down.
The typical ingredients are mix between African and Brazilian and include coconut oil, hot peppers and shrimp. Try the Macueca, which is a fish stew served in simmering clay pot.

Itaparica Island
The island...

Itaparica Island
The island itself (in front of Salvador) is not something to drool for, in my opinion. Not Itaparica (maybe Frades or Madre de Deus). But crossing the All Saint Bay back and forth is absolutely marvelous.

Airport
by Subria
The airport of Salvador da Bahia has mainly domestic flights but also a few international departures, for example TAP daily to Lisbon or Condor weekly to Frankfurt. For flights within Brazil you can use Varig, TAM or the Low Cost Carrier GOL.
From the airport to the city center you have three options, taking a taxi is the fastest but also the most expensive. To save money take the executivo bus to Praca de Se or a local bus.
