taxi from salvador rodoviaria(bus station) to pelourinho

A taxi from the rodoviaria to Pelourinho would be about R$35-40. You can also cross over the pedestrian overpass (passarela) to the front of the mall (Shopping Iguatemi) and ask where the mini-bus for Barra and Pelourinho stops.

The mini-bus from Praca de Se is good enough to get to the airport, but a taxi might be faster as they usually cut over onto the inland highway which has less traffic. The bus goes up the coast road and sometimes is slowed by heavy traffic, so leave enough time.

Travel Tips for Salvador da Bahia

Elevador Lacerda - Lacerda...

by martinelli

Elevador Lacerda - Lacerda Elevator The Lacerda Elevator was built in the late 1880's and its main purpose is to link the Low City to the High City (ATTENTION! Those names reffer purely to geographic aspects!). As years went by it turn out to be a major tourist attraction and therefore it will be turn into a panoramic elevator. Still you can have a wonderful view of it and from the elevator lobby in the High city. You can see the All Saints' Bay and the whole Low city panoramics... ah!

Cocada - Delicious Coconut Dessert

by mircaskirca

Cocada is a popular dessert or a small sweet made with coconut. There are a lot of ways of preparing this delicious dessert. Essential ingredients are grated coconut, sugar and water but sometimes condensed milk and lime can be added as well.

1/2 kg of (brown) sugar
1/2 kg of grated coconut
1 lime
1 cup of water

Put the sugar and water in a saucepan and heat until the sugar dissolves. Then add the coconut to the sugar mixture. Mix together over the heat continuously until the mixture is thick and syrupy and the bottom of the pan is visable. Mix in the lime juice and take the pan off the heat. Pour the mixture onto a baking sheet immediately and when it has hardened a little, but is still soft, cut into squares. Wait to eat until the squares are hard and cooled off.

This is the basic recipe though condensed milk, cinnamon and even fruit or nuts can be added. My favourite is cocada queimada, which is made from brown sugar with the addition of cinnamon and cloves. Ahhh, yummy!!!

You can get delicious home-made cocada from baianas on the street and sometimes local people sell it on the beach as well.

Great mall

by acemj about Shopping Barra

This mall was a convenient place for me to stop and check out shopping, Salvador style. It's a modern mall with some interesting Brazilian shops that I had never heard of before. On the whole, the clothing seems to be a very high quality here and prices are a lot better than in the States.

Place to avoid!

by travelingfinn about Kebab Tropical

We (five persons, three native portuguese speakers) were really disappointed! Add said they serve Mediterranean dishes, Italian pizza, pasta etc. Prices were above average and service was arrogant. We ordered chicken breast, pasta with 4 cheeses and two big pizzas. We told the waitor three times that we want the pizzas without oregano because two of us are allergic to it. The waiter didn't seem very interested anyway so here's what we got: two pizzas with oregano, beef stake and the pasta with four cheeses. We told the waiter that this was not what we had ordered but he stubbornly insisted that this he had written down in his pad. This was really " once in a life-time" experience in the worst sense.

The pizzas were as bad as the service. They were American-style panpizzas, probably pre-baked. You can buy better deep-frozen pizzas from the supermarket.

You'll get better value for your money at the Barra Shopping's fast-food section, try Yan Pin's! The only descent dish was the beef, which we did not order.
