Carnival w/ no $$ possible??

by jjmanis

Hi everyone, I really want to go to Bahia for carnival but I don't really have any extra funds available at the moment. However what I am able to do is get to Bahia. I have friends who work at United air and have gotten me a few free random flights in the past. They told me that getting me to Brazil for Carnival should be no problem. My question is... Is it possible for me to go to Bahia with little to no money?? For you natives or permanent residents living there, do you think it's a good idea? What I have heard so far is "if you can just get there you're set, party it up" Well I have roundtrip tickets so... Should I do it? Oh and btw, I'm 22 male from Hawaii and I'm looking to party HARD if its possible!

Some things I've been pondering are: A. WOOFING (maybe not a good idea since it's so short notice B. hospitality club/couchsurfing (I'm considering this but they require your passport number... Identity theft suddenly pops in my mind so I don't know about either of those..) What are your thoughts...?

Hi, as US citizen there is one thing you require before you go to Brazil, have you already your visa?
Carnival is from Feb19 to Feb25, so you've short time do it if you did not already have it.

Hopefully getting a visa won't take too long but I don't want get the visa until I'm sure that I'm going. Confidence-wise and I have to have a "solid failproof" plan in place. Another reason is because if I don't go then I will have wasted $100 plus on visa documentation that expires in 90 days.

Unless you enjoy living like a Brazilian vagrant (sleeping on a piece of cardboard on the fouled sidewalks), just turning up is a bad idea. Stay home, save and plan for next year.

I don't know if is a good or bad idea. It depends on how much you will carry to Salvador. Do you have money to feed? Do you have money to stay in Salvador's Hostels? Are you going to mount camping on beaches?
I believe you're too late in finding acommodations.. Now a rent bedchamber in Salvador is too expensive. However I am listing some links to use if today is your luck day:

Brazilian beach combers use to work at carnival time. So be caution on Carnival parties.

Carnival (and Reveillon) are the most expensive periods to visit Brazil, those are the only weeks of the year that everybody could rent a room, a their place to get some extra money, it does not matter how many stars or moons, for those periods it's already hard to find a place saving money, it will be harder without $$$, beside all Cassiomaggiore is right, it will be very hard to find an accomodation for next month Carnival in SSA. I did not check any prices and/or availability, but if United has no direct flight to SSA, for sure they go to São Paulo, you'll need and internal flight, Brazil is bigger then Australia, as a Star Alliance Member, United will use TAM and, I know for my own experience, most of the flight with TAM for Carnival to SSA and GIG are sold out soon or with few seat left quite expensive. If I weere you I also would plan better for next year or look for any Caribbean Carnival (some of them during summer so you've more time) where United goes directly and you need any VISA (and save money).
Oi.

Travel Tips for Salvador da Bahia

Capoeira

by Frann

Capoeira is a mix of dance, sport and martial art, very common in Salvador. Here you see groups of people playing and learning Capoeira’s moves, specially in the old part of the city, to the sound of typical instruments like the atabaque, the berimbau and the pandeiro . I am crazy about the sound of atabaques and any kind of drums, so I love Capoeira´s music.

The sport is practiced by men and women of all classes and age groups. Capoeira traces its origins to the black culture and is,undoubtedly one of Salvador’s greatest riches. I´ve tried to play Capoeira, but it didn´t work!!

AMENDOIM!

by Kittelite

If you go to Salvador for the first time, you will surely wonder what the boys with the big bowls on the shoulders are selling... This is PEANUTS!! Fresh peanuts , boiled in salted water until tender like the beans they really are!!
This snack is cheap (around 1 R$ per serving- or 3 packs for a R$) It is healthy, and absolutely delicious when fresh!!(light coloured) Enjoy this yummy thing whenever you feel like a snack. It can substitute a light meal too!

A Day at the Beach

by travelingbunny

A wonderful day trip while in Salavador is to the small island of Itaparica. The beaches there are beautiful and uncrowded, and the boat ride across to the island is a great way to get out on the water. There was a terrific little restaurant right ton the beach that made us fresh grilled fish for lunch and magically - refreshing caprinias.

Shopping for Art Works

by mircaskirca about Various Shops in Pelourinho and in Mercado Modelo

For those, interested in art works, expecially the paintings, Salvador is certainly the place! In Pelourinho there are several art studios where you can observe local artists while creating their pieces of art. You also find numerous shops and small galleries selling paintings and other works of art. Some of them have really fantastic collections and are worth visiting at least for having a look. paintings (from naif, with typical Bahian motifs, to modern and extraordinary styles) wooden statues, sculptures, ceramics, painted clothes prices are reasonable, you can bergain as well

A gap-toothed wonder

by acemj about Sorriso da Dada

Don't let the exterior appearance deter you from eating at Dada. Once inside, you'll find a cozy room with paintings of the proprietor herself, Dada. She is a warm looking Afro-Brazilian woman usually depicted in traditional clothing and with a bright smile accented by a charming gap between her two front teeth. Too bad I didn't meet her while I was at her restaurant. Based on the photos of famous celebrities (Hillary Clinton, for example) on the walls with her, she looks like a very friendly lady. I started with a caipirinha, the national drink of Brazil that's made with sugar, lime, ice and a sugarcane liquor called cachaca. Then, I ate a couple appetizers which filled me up just fine. The casquinha de siri (crabmeat) was really good. I also had vatapa. Yum.
