by leilaleki

Hello there
Me and my boyfirend are planning to stay in salvador for cupple of mounths and i am woundering if anybody knows how expensive it is to rent an apartment or a house in salvador. We are looking for something that is cheap or maybe somebody has some good suggestions on cheap hostels?
We are not looking for anything exclusive, rather something simple...

Re: apartments to rent in bahia???

This is the best site for all types of information about Salvador, including a very good accomodation page that includes most hostels:
www.bahia-online.net
There are also ads for a couple of real estate agents who rent apartments and who are American (i.e. speak English which makes things easier for non-Portuguese spaekers). But apartments aimed at foreigners are likely to be considerably more expensive.

For apartments, you would need something furnished. Look for rentals on the site for the local newspaper A Tarde, and particularly for the words "temporada" (short term) and "mobiliada" (furnished). The site is
http://www.atarde.com.br/capa/
Look on the left side under "Classificados" to click on "Imoveis & Cia". On the page that displays, under "Imoveis ALugel", click "Apartamentos" on the left and page past the agencies to the ads that say which "bairro" (neighborhod) the apartment is in. Some include the monthly rental price, some don't.
You would have to know something about the city and which neighborhood you want to live in. The tourist neighborhoods tend to be more expensive, high season is starting and Carnaval is coming up.

Your best idea might be to show up and stay at a hostel until you can get a feel for the city and arrange something for that couple of months.

Travel Tips for Salvador da Bahia

Ordem Terceira de Sao Francisco

by acemj

There's some great architectural highlights throughout Salvador, especially in Pelourinho, but it's not confined to this area. You'll also find some interesting areas between Pelourinho and Barra near the university.

This picture shows the Orden Terceira de Sao Francisco next to the Igreja de Sao Francisco. The sandstone facade is intricately carved and leads to some interesting blue tiles inside.

If you're going to buy food...

by msp_ssa

If you're going to buy food from a street vendor please don't haggle especially if it's a child. A one or two Real difference isn't much for an American or European tourist, but it's a big difference for someone who walks the streets every day trying to sell peanuts.

Samba Modelo

by Kittelite

A little known friday night event, is the 19-23 samba in Mercado Modelo. The scene is set up outside, where the capoeira is during the day, Its more relaxed than other places i went to, and it seems like it is for an adult type of people. I like it a lot, The music is usually samba de pagode. It is mostly locals who come to have a beer and a cheerful evening.

Café Edith Piaf

by martinelli about Café Edith Piaf

Best known as 'Café da Aliança'. This is the cafe of the Alliance Française of Salvador. In a beautiful colonial house with a view to the Bay of All Saints, this cafe is one of the best places in town. Run by the sweet Ervé, with magnificent food and nice drinks. There's a restaurant just under the cafe. The cuisine is high quality, the prices are not-so-cheap-not-too-expensive.

Hot Dog Duplo

by Zarasher about Barra Burguer

This Burger place is in Porto Barra on Sete de Setembro. You cannot miss it. It is on the main road and has bright blue and yellow signing. there are burgers for every need. Stuff that you don't even normally get in burgers like sweetcorn and peppers.

They also do hotdogs. I like the bacon cheese eggburger. I guess that explains itsself.

They have meal deals for between 5-7 Reais where you get a fruit juice (smoothie) with your burger. Lots of fruits to choose from... pineapple, apple, cherry, passionfruit, mango, banana...

The great thing about this place is that it is open late, so when you are stavin' Marvin and in need of food you can always go to Barra Burguer! I think it stays open until about 2am.
