Cidade Alta e Cidade Baixa
by msp_ssa
Salvador's traditional center is the area of Cidade Baixa and Cidade Alta, the lower city and the upper city. Cidade Baixa is where you'll find many banks and businesses. Mercado modelo is here. The Federal Police office, where you can renew your visa, is close. It's on the way to the ferry terminal where you can catch a ferry boat to Itaparica and Morro de São Paulo. The Lacerda Elevator links the upper city to the lower city. Pelourinho is in Cidade Alta.
This picture shows a little bit of Cidade Baixa and Cidade Alta. To the left of this picture you would find Mercado Modelo and Elevador Lacerda. Behind me, from where I took this picture, there is a smaller boat that you can take to Mar Grande on Itaparica. It's quicker than the ferry boat. It holds about 20 people or so.
The church in the center of this picture is called Igreja Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia. It was first built in Portugal then brought to Brazil piece by piece.
Berimbaus
by acemj
Berimbaus are interesting instruments of African origin that are used in candomble and capoeira. They have an unusual timbre produced by striking a rod and a ring or coin on a metal string attached to a bow with a resonating dried gourd. It is played together with a caxixi which is shaken while striking the string. You'll see big ones and little souvenir ones being sold all over Salvador, and you will probably hear someone playing the instrument on the streets of Pelourinho.
lots of great churches
by globetrott
This is another great church in Bahia.
I had been in Bahia several times between 1978 and 1985 -
Walking in the city, especially in these streets , where lots of poor people were living, was a danger sometimes.
It might be different today - and I never had any problems , but collegues of mine were robbed...
Live music in Salvador da Bahia
by abmukam about Beco da Gal
Very popular on Wednesday is the kind of place you go if you feel like street party all night although it takes place in a alley and you pay for it (5 Real). Live pagode and samba. Get there at 10pm. Dress down. Age 25-40.
Seafood, Steak... Brazilian Style
by Zarasher about Portal Do Mar
From the outside you could easily miss this gem.
It is very simple and understated.
On the inside there are firm wooden chairs and tables, nothing gives it that "fancy" edge that I tend to find myself attracted too.
I was suprised at how good the food was, as well as the service Steak skewer with sides of Farofa, rice and salad with pimenta
Fried fish is excellent and succulent. You can ask for it to be halfed so you only have to pay half the cost. The steak sker was 34 Reias with the sides and the fish was 28, half was 14 and way more than enough for one person.
