Carnaval 2011

by gmg88860

I a planning to attend my 1st Carnaval in Salvador 2011. I am researching and finding (as expected) that the pousadas, apartments, and hotels are priced very high compared to even the high season. Ok, so given that can anyone recommend a a good place to stay for 2 or 3 50ish year old men. Not really looking for the big hotels, pousadas are fine, or even an apartment (with a relatively good rate for the carnaval season) we can share the cost. Also, are there any places not inside the city core that will still allow ready access to and from the circuits for the evenings. Looking at the map I see some islands very close to Salvador, it is reasonable to stay at one of these and boat/ferry to the city? I'm just brainstorming here and so will greatly appreciate any advise you can share. thanks in advance. George from Seattle

Look at the accomodations page of www.bahia-online.net, and also read the rest of the site (neighborhoods, beaches, bands)as thoroughly as possible--the best intro to Salvador.
Also try:
www.apartbahia.com
Everything is marked up to 3X normal high season for that property, so "relatively good rate" has no meaning.

If you stay very far out from the two main parade routes, you will be spending a fortune on taxis. The ferry to/from Itaparica, for which you can normally just walk up and buy a ticket for the next frequent departure, often has hours of wait during Carnaval, so I would not think that a good idea unless for a getaway day or two. Also note that the party continues after Carnaval for Ressaca (hangover) in Morro do Sao Paulo.

Thanks bahiana77!

I suspected much of what you told me but it is good to hear it from a knowledgeable person. As to reasonable rate, what i meant to convey is I understand everything is at its highest rate, however I hope to find a way to distinguish between someone charging say 3x vs charging 10x or more for similar accommodations. I have been to bahia-online.net and will revisit to explore more. I'll also look into apartbahia, as you suggest.

Thanks again

George

Most hotels, and also apartment rentals, will have already posted their high season rates online, and most will also have a rate for their Carnaval package as well. (Note: Accomodations for Carnaval in Salvador are usually sold in 7 day packages, full deposit required in advance.)
And rethinking about some past rates I actually know firsthand (a room that was R$60/night in high season was R$300 for Carnaval), I would actually revise my first post math to say that prices are 5X high season rate.
Oh and another place to look for apartments is craigslist salvador.

The price is the price is the price come carnaval. Face the fact that this is peak season and nobody is very likely to give a gringo tourist a break, it's the time when hotels and apartment owners make their money. Don't feel bad though, domestic tourists from São Paulo are stuck with pretty much the same prices and options. :-)

This site will give you plenty of options regarding short term rentals:

http://www.aluguetemporada.com.br/

Or you could try the classified in A Tarde:

http://classificados.atarde.com.br/

You will find staying over on Itaparica rather inconvenient and tiresome if you are focussed on carnaval itself.

Once you've done a bit of research on where you think you will stay, feel free to ask about the locale, I have a fairly good knowledge of the various parts of town.

Enjoy your stay.

Travel Tips for Salvador da Bahia

Salvador de Bahia - Colorful churches

by globetrott

Salvador de Bahia - doesn't that sound already like adventure... Salvador de Bahia - such a great name and one of the biggest towns of Brazil

I remember, that in Bahia there were a lot of colorfull churches of all sizes - especially in the quarters of the poor people.

Fitas on your wrist

by Zarasher

Colourful ribbons (fitas) are widely sold around Salvador. A ribbon is worn knotted on the wrist, and the wearer can make several wishes. The ribbon must be worn continuously until it frays and falls off, by which time the wishes will be granted.
When I first got there I accepted... but after you have had ten tied on your wrist you generally just dont want another one!

Some people will ask for money and some won't...

kite surf

Pesque-pague If you go to...

by martinelli

Pesque-pague If you go to Litoral Norte and are already a bit tired of wonderful beaches, a good and relaxing and sure fun option is to stop by one of the pesque-pague (fish-and-pay) places. Here's the deal: you rent the fishing equipment for about US$0,75, buy some bait for US$ 0,50 and spend the day fishing in artificial lagoons amongts natural white dunes. It's calm and quiet... and they have delicious drinks. They're all over the Litoral Norte. One I went to and liked was in Hotel Neptunus . Check the page for the address. But you can't miss it, it's 5 minuts past the entrance for Buraquinho beach. Check one of the tilapias I fished there! Just a little sample of all 17 of them...

Gloss

by martinelli about Gloss

Small but nice, Gloss is a bit expensive, but not if you arrive before midnight. Then it´s a bit cheaper! *laughs* . There´s live music sometimes... If you want to make a flashing entrance, wear white - they have black light, so you´ll be glowing while dancing, ya know... hehe...
