Orisha and Condomblè
by ludogatto
To understand a little bit more Salvador and its 'povo', please read something about Orisha, Condomblè and the slevary before visiting this palce.....
Like Capoeira Orisha was the answer of the slavery to the proibithion of the portuguese to practice the traditional african religion: the african transformed the catholic Saints in Orishas, that were the mixture of afican and catholic divinity.
In Salvador there is lake with in the middle the statue of Orishas, very nice in the light of the night.
Morro de Sao Paulo
by Andreas_Fran
In the last twenty-one years or so, Morro de Sao Paul has gone from isolated, way-off-the-beaten-track third-world village to sun-and-beach international get-down party-hearty town. It is less of the kind of place to meet the locals and take in local culture than it is to soak in natural splendor and party all night long with people from all over the world.
These beach parties really heat up during the Brazilian summer (January until after Carnival) and happen every night. During the rest of the year they take place on Saturday nights, though not with the same intensity. Morro's drinks de rigueur are roskas, tropical fruits (your choice!) crushed in with sugar and vodka -- powerful and seditious.
The "main street" of the village is a sandy path lined on both sides with restaurants and bars, and the beaches are generally referred to with an un-Brazilian pragmatism as "first", "second", "third", or "fourth". The first beach (small) is lined with pousadas; the second beach (wide) is the party beach; the third beach (somewhat smaller again) is lined with more pousadas; and the fourth beach is extensive, beautiful, Caribbean-like tropical paradise.
Upscale grocer
by acemj about Perini
Perini was also a grocery store located in Barra, but this was closer to the shoreline facing the ocean on the south side of town. It's a lot smaller than Bompreco, but it had some interesting items and some great pastries. A little more upscale and expensive, but a good store.
Dinner and Folklore Show
by ahoerner about Solar do Unhão/MAM
"Solar do Unhão" is an old sugar mill formed by beautifully preserved heritage buildings centered around a lovely stone courtyard that dates back to the 18th century. The main building houses the Museu de Arte Moderna (modern art museum), exhibiting works of some of the greatest modern Brazilian artists.
At night a dinner and folklore show happens from Monday through Saturday. Great food and top quality show.
I don't know if it still is like it used to be, but dinner and show happened in the old "senzala", which is the building basemend where slaves used to live during slavery times in Brazil.
I was only 13 then, and it was great to know that side of Brazil I wasn't familiar with. Good typical food.
