Traveling to Joao Pessoa in mid June
by lfa11
Hi there!
I'm going to JP around the 19th of June, and I'm wondering how much rain I should expect at that time of the year (I'll be there for a week). How far is JP from "Praia da Pipa"? Is it doable as a day trip? Thanks
Luiz

You might be interested in this thread about JP on the expat forum Gringoes.com, that set some sort of site record for responses. Any of these enthusiastic residents of JP would be happy to answer your most detailed questions, I'm sure.

Pipa is about 120km/75 miles from JP. There are a number of beaches to visit near the village: Praia do Amor/Afogados, Praia das Minas, Praia de Boia, Baia dos Golfinhos, Praia do Madeiro...and excursions by horseback, buggy, kayak, catamaran...reggae, samba and forro at night....so day trip or stay is up to you.

Praia da Pipa is around 150Km far from Joao Pessoa. Praia da Pipa is connected to Joao Pessoa by a paved road. However Praia da Pipa is closer to Natal/RN, and there are current public buses between Natal and Pipa.
June is the time of a regional festivity at these places. People named this festivity as June's Party. People make-up as hayseed and bring into play.
The June's party of Campina Grande (Paraiba State) and Caruaru (Pernambuco State) are
well known by brazilians.
At this time there is no rain at these locations.
I am sending below some links concerned in Pipa and brazilian June's festivity.

Not to dampen your spirit but dont forget you are coming to JP at the height of the rainy season. As a general rule, it rains during the night and peters out in the morning.
On the subject of websites, there is a brand new website called
www.paraibaparadise.com
which is solly devoted to everything, Joao Pessoa. It is regularly updated and the "whats on where" is probably the most comprehensive in Brasil.
The site deals with all aspects and even has a forum.

Tamashin,
I'm also planning to travel to JP during May and the first part of June. Is it VERY rainy throughout the day, or heavy rains mainly in the evening but still sunny and warm during the day? Is May better than June?

Lori, Tamashin's last log in date here on VT was Aug 19, 2008, and he is part of the J.P. group whose URL you were given on your other post. You'd probably have better luck getting an answer/contacting him through there.

THE RIVER AND THE SEA
by RafaelTheSecond
In the beaches of Traição Bay it is very common to find rivers ending in the sea, and this is one of the exits of Mamanguape River...This is the local habitat of the rare mamatti which we call here PEIXE BOI. It takes ages to reach the other edge by canoe, but we made it, thanks to a local which unfortunately I forgot his name!
During the afternoon the sea gets shalow, but it can be dangerous as the tyle can increase in any moment!

Jacare beach (Alligator Beach)
by FrediKesselring
It is a wonderful place to sit at a bar and see the sunset. They play "Ravel's Bolero" everyday here while the sun is setting. It is also a good place for jet skiing or sailing. A Sunday afternoon here is usually lively.
