Fernanda loves the beach, but recovering from the sun means... shopping around. In Europe all the resorts are prepared to Fernandas, but in Brazil, only Porto de Galinhas approached to her taste. It was a superficial look, but Maragogi seemed a very small town with not many attractions when the sun goes down. Wrong? maybe, but that's what we saw and felt.
Several boys will approach you in the pools, offering underwater photographs. It's expensive, with doubtful quality, but... fun. We dealt with Ivanildo who promised to take us 20 pictures (almost identical, but he did!) and add to the CD almost 200 of his other local photos. Some of them, browsed at home, left me the idea that Maragogi has some more hidden beauties, deserving a deeper observation.
Sometimes we read in the news, the serious social problems in Brazil, caused by the existence of thousands of people without any mean of subsistence. They organized in very revendicative groups, and settled in precarious habitations, always in the side of important roads, to enhance the consequences of their revendicative movements. In our way to Maragogi we saw several villages of this poor people, alerting for the troubles of a rich country with a poor people.
Two times a month, the reefs off Maragogi become very special. This is at the low tides of the full and new moons. The day before and the day after comprise the best three day window in each case. There are places that you can walk out to the beach IF you have tennis or beach shoes with good rubber soles. We walk out from the Antunes beach, it is a bit longer, but the tropical pools are large, deep and spectacular. Just check with the fishermen and watch your time, start out at least 45 minutes before low tide and come back to the beach no later than 45 minutes after the tide has changed if you are walking. Of course, you can find fishermen with sailing jangadas and have a real adventure of several hours!
To the north of Maragogi´s Beach Front on the Barra Grande Beach which is about five kilometers from the city, a long sand spit is uncovered at low tide. This is especially worth seeing on the days around the full and the new moon. The beach buggies go way out into the lagoon. But, those that are walking can go even further, but soon find that the reef at that point is unobtainable. Still there are great places to swim and if you are lucky you´ll find some large shells. It is a great place to take pictures too.
If you don´t have wheels, take one of the "combies", the small jittnys that go up the coastal highway and get off at Barra Grande and walk down through the village to the beach. Who knows, you might see me there!!
