Walk in the the Praca de Liberdade (pictured above) This is a very nice area of Belo Horizonte lined with very tall palm trees. At the end of this park is the Palacio da Liberdade,a French style mansion. The friendly people of Belo Horizonte. I made a few friends there, just by hanging around the pubs in Savassi.
Minas Gerais is a privileged state situaded in the southeast of Brazil, spread over an area of 587.172 km2 inland. It shares borders with as many different states as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Góias states.
Due to its large industrial estate, it has the nation’s third best economy, being preceded only by São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Car companies such as Fiat and Mercedes Bens have their Latin American headquarters here. As far as exportation is concerned, the state plays one of the leading roles in the country and is responsible for the commercial surplus of coffee, milk and cheese. It also stands as a leader in the field of mining. By the way, it was exactly due to mining, besides the extraction of gold and diamonds, that the region gained its name, fame and power.
The wealth flaunted by Minas Gerais in the 18th century, especially by the city of Vila Rica, nowadays Ouro Preto (98km far from Belo Horizonte), yielded countless returns for Brazil, a Portuguese colony at the time. But the price paid by the Crown was too high. Guided by the ideals of the Enlightenment, unknown intelectuals and military officers led the most important pro-independence movement in the country’s history, the Inconfidência Mineira, which ended up making a martyr, Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, second lieutenant "Tiradentes" (present name of a historical city - 210 km far from BH).
In art, despite the delay, baroque was the reigning style – in Europe it began in the 16th century. Luxury and extravagance were pompously displayed, and that allowed the appearance of artists like Antônio Francisco Lisboa, the Aleijadinho. Considered the greatest name in fine arts at that time, the artist engraved altars (Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso Church in Caeté– 52 km from BH), designed fascades (Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church, in Sabará– 19 km from BH), made sculptures in soapstone (The Prophets, in Congonhas– 89 km from BH), as well as architectural projects, such as the one for São Francisco de Assis da Penitência Church in Ouro Preto, the masterpiece of baroque in Minas Gerais. Due to its cities’ secular architectural complex, Minas Gerais is sure to be included in the country’s touristic itinerary. Just a reminder: Ouro Preto and Diamantina have been given the title of world historic patrimonies by Unesco.
This gold boom provided fertile ground for the birth of bands and of a musical tradition, the Serenata, whose presence can still be widely felt in regional art. Black slaves brought from Africa by Europeans absorbed the principles of Christianity, and began to celebrate their religious feasts in a very particular way. Among the most renowned ones, we could point out Folia de Santos Reis, Pastoris, Festa do Divino, Cavalhada and Congado – all devoted to Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Santa Efigênia and São Benedito. The mixture of races among blacks, whites and indians, so typical of Brazil, gave the state another tasty characteristic: its food.
Livestock and coffee farming started to expand in the region, after the fall in gold extraction. Despite this, Minas Gerais kept on fostering culture and being a source of it at the same time. Poets and composers became more intensely inspired, and that brought out beliefs, sayings and folk characters like saci-pererê.
Nowadays different art forms such as theater, dance, circus, fine arts and cinema are vehicles of endless creative force. Several local artists have already conquered the respect of critics and public around the world. Belo horizonte was planned and built to be the new state capital in december of 1897 and is now the third biggest city in Brazil.
