Founded in 1897, today Belo Horizonte is Brazil’s third largest city and an important industrial center.
The city’s main tourist attraction is Pampulha, a planned neighborhood surrounding a man-made lake and graced by an architectural complex designed by world famous Oscar Niemeyer. It is one of the principal success stories of contemporary Brazilian architecture.
The complex is basically composed of the Saint Francis of Assisi Church, the Casa do Baile (an elegant ballroom), the Yacht Club and the Museum of Contemporary Art. The city enjoys a lively cultural calendar, especially at the Palácio das Artes (a multi-theater performing arts center). Night life is also lively and the Savassi district offers many entertainment opportunities at its nightclubs, bars and restaurants.

"Beautiful People"
I stayed with a wonderful family for 3 weeks..July to August and ate wonderful food and swam in the Atlantic while the locals looked on...they must have thought I was crazy...it was wintertime there. But coming from Chicago, the water seemed nice enough. The current however, knew better than me and I got tossed onto the beach a few times before I gave up.
There are some interesting areas outside of BH that had some statues...I still don't know what that area was all about but I have some fab pics..no scanner yet.
The family I stayed with...the Father owned marble mines...7 colors and (mine supply and land ownership) to last the family 300 more years of business. He commented, "You know all that Italian marble the Americans buy? Well, they got it from me!!!"
Maybe it was an exaggeration, but it was interesting all the same. Brazilian men---MACHISMO at it's finest display. The women were beautiful. Portuguese is a damn hard language to learn.
A visit to the Mines of Brazil
by pjallittle
The very name of this State of Brazil is Minas Gerais. The General Mines. So important is this industry that the State announces itself as the area in which this business is conducted.
Looking back over the centuries to the late 1400's and early 1500's we see one of the principal attractions for the discovery of the Americas, the quest for gold and fine gems. For that is what the early discoverers were seeking.
The original subject of this page is Belo Horizonte, the largest city and capital of Minas Gerais.
