Exploring south of Cuiaba - Pq Nac. Pantanal - Mato-Gros. ; Fever Amerela.

by peace_prevails

Ola,

My wife and I are visiting the Cuiaba area for 3 or 4 days in September and wondering what to do. Does anyone have any experiences with places South of Cuiaba that might be interesting to visit? We do not want to join any formal tours and would like to see a bit of the back country and local people.

Has anyone been to Pq. Nac. do Pantanal Mato-Grossenese? If so, how long does it take and any suggested places to visit within the park?

Lastly, do we need out fever amerela (yellow fever) shots before getting to Pantanal?

Beijinhas,
PP

Hi,

The Pantanal itself is not a national park, but there is a national park within the Pantanal, which is located in the very south of the state of Mato Grosso. The national park is 100.000 he. (200,000 acres), but it is not a tour area. Ranchers own the rest of land.

You can stay at the ranches (fazendas) to explore the area. A minimum stay of 3 days/2 nights gives you a good impression of the area. Then you can do all kinds of activities (horse back riding, canoeing, piranha fishing, trekking, night spotting tours, etc). Your guide will make the difference.

If you really want to see more than the general tours and meet local people, contact Julinho from www.pantanaltrackers.com.br. He can take you to all the places you want. He's a local guide, speaks fluently english and has the best knowledge of the area. Most of the tour operators will force you into doing 'the usual' tour packages, and that's something you don't want.

B.t.w. There's no yellow fever (or mallaria) in the Pantanal, but the Brazilian government recommends a yellow fever vacination. This applies for the whole of Brazil.

Enjoy,
Carla

Carla,
Obrigado. Would it be better to have Campo Grande or Cuiaba as a base for exploring the Pantanal? We're not into the touristy thing too much, but just looking for real experience.
Tchau,
Jefinho

Olá,

I can only tell you about Cuiabá.... don't know much about tour operators in Campo Grande. In your mail you were talking about going to Cuiabá. Campo Grande is app. 800 km from Cuiabá. Guess you have to contact several tour operators in the area (Cuiabá and CG), tell them what you want to do, and then make up your mind. Believe me, your tourguide will make the difference, not the area. The Pantanal is the Pantanal.

The 'problem' is that most of the tour operators only offer fixed tours with programmed day activities. They form a group (6-8 people) and then you go. I also know many tour operators who hire guides who speak english, but are no locals and don't have much knowledge of the area... Cheaper and easier for them, less interesting for you. You want to see daily life, visit other places than where the majority goes to.... that's why I mentioned the guys in my previous mail.

The Pantanal does have yellow fever, however it is not very common. It is a smart idea to get the vaccine, especially since it is not too expensive.
