Brumas Hostel: Questionable Option
Originally this hostel was my place to rest but due to not being allowed to check in (arrived at 7am on an overnight bus which most travellers do from Rio De Janeiro) they wouldnt let me check in until 1pm. Being exhausted and frustrated I decided to look elswhere but not before checking the place out. The lounge area is funky with a fire place, board games and sofas but this hostel lacks any English speaking staff. Not a major problem and an opportunity to learn more Portuguese but sometimes it is a great benefit to have a person speaking English at a hostel in a foreign country. Overall, it seems decent in my hour here.
Unique Quality: Down the road from the bus station.

Pousada Sao Francisco: Decent Place
PSF is described in guide books as an oasis in the desert located in a beatiful garden with chirping birds and great guest kitchen. Granted, the owner is a hippie chilled out reggae rocking guy but this place is suffering from a lack of much needed TLC. The double rooms are a bit tatty and old although they have great views overlooking the city. After finding a massive fist size spider in my double room (due to holes/cracks in my door that allowed insects to enter my room at will) I moved to the much better tomb (literallyl tomb like) doubles on the first floor. They were cheaper with much cleaner bathrooms. The kitchen was full of black flies in the morning and would benefit with a closed door policy in the morning to avoid such annoyances. Overall, there is a lot of potential for this place but it just needs to be cared for and revamped. Decent experience. Great owner :)
Unique Quality: Literally down the street from the bus station making late or early connections easy.

Hostel Brumas
Hostel Brumas The location is the best asset as it gives stunning views of the city and guests love to gather in the yard for the sunset!
Breakfast is of high quality and large variety and is served in the spacious dining-living room. The lady running and the staff are very nice and can help with any information. You can check your emails free.
Room prices start at 45R$ for a dorm bed and 70R$ for a double with private bathroom. If you are single and you need a double negotiate the price... I paid 50R$. These are high season prices.
For luxurious hotels click here http://www.brazils-hotels.com/ouropret_hotels.htm These are between 100$US and 200$US

Estalagem das Minas Gerais: Classical Place
Lots of space, inside and, specially, outside the hotel, in a well gardened and forested area, with a large garden.
My friend Marcos risked to freeze in the pool, we didn't. The service was good, the only drawback is the distance from town, obliging to use the car, which was no problem for us.

Pousada S. Francisco de Paula: Great Pousada!!!!!!!
Great Pousada. It's a really relaxed place with hammocks and clean rooms. The breakfast is suprisingly good, coffee, more then one thing of bread, jam, butter, and bunt cake. The people who stayed there were awesome. I had a great time with everyone. We even went out with Daniel, one of the people who help run it. He seriously knows everyone in town. The place is located 100m from the bus station and has an amazing room.
Unique Quality: Stay in one of the couple rooms up near the kitchen. You have a balcony and a wonderful view of the city. Yeah, you're going to have to go up and down a big hill but it'll be a good workout for your bottom and calves.
