A renovated 19th century mansion, the 'Solar' is a luxury hotel. Staff members are friendly and helpful. Valet parking is provided. The location is a bit far from the center of Ouro — the Praça Tiradentes — but in an especially picturesque part of town.

UPDATE (2008)
I went back to Minas Gerais this June. I wanted my wife to see Ouro Preto and Aleijadinho's masterpieces in Congonhas. (She had not accompanied me in 1998 or on any of my other three trips to Brazil.)

I chose the Hotel Solar NS do Rosario chiefly because of its superb restaurant. Alas, it closed, permanently, in July 2007. A so-so breakfast was served in what was once Le Coq d'Or; otherwise the room was used for meetings.

The hotel is still fine. But if were ever to visit Ouro Preto again, I'd choose a more centrally located place.
