Beco do bispo.: Excellent pousada.

Beco do bispo is a very nice little pousada set in a former house of a wealthy doctors family.
The rooms and the whole pousada in general is decorated very nicely and the staff was very helpful when i was there.
It´s located in a small alley right in the center of town and is within walking distance of most sights in town.

Very pretty little place.

If your plans include visiting more interesting places around São João or if you are on a low budget, then it is advisable to stay near the bus station, especially if you don't care much about luxury. There is a small hotel on the side road of the station, Hotel Colibri, small and uninteresting, but friendly and convenient. Rooms with private bathroom and TV cost 25R$. You can commute to Tiradentes or elsewhere very easily. There is a little noise during the day but you will never be there, I suppose... During the night it is safe and quiet.

*For more comfort and relaxation there is Hotel Brasil in the historical center (32) 3371-2804
*And the historic Hotel Colonial (32) 3371-7327 on the bank of the river with some river-view rooms.

Hotel Ponte Real: Walk to the Train Station

The rooms are small, but reasonably comfortable. The hotel is only blocks from the train station. The hotel also has a small shop where it is possible to purchase local pewter items.

The hotel is also located on the Corrego do Lenheiro, the parkway set aside for the waterway through the town.

The photograph here is of a bridge near the hotel, over the parkway along the "River of Death". In this city, the river is near the point of its origin, so it is more of a small stream than a river.

The foot bridge pictured here (made almost entirely of old railroad rails) shows this waterway corridor.
