Safe destination?

by maritaweb

Hi! I'm travelling alone in March to this place and I wonder if it is a safe place for a girl? As far as I know, it is a very quiet place. I'm staying at Pousada Arandu...any comments about the destination and the hotel?
Thanks!

Porto de Galinhas is an attractive holiday destination. The place has some nice pousadas, restaurants and one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. I recommend you to make at least a day trip to very charming colonial town Olinda, perhaps also Recife.

I visited Porto de Galinhas a couple of years ago (solo woman traveller) and felt absolutely safe.

Have fun!

I've been to PdG and I felt safe there, a little less in Recife, but that is also a big town. Of course do not take any gold, any value watch... as usual.
My favorite beach was the one where the house of the governor is.
There is no dress code in PdG, even if safe it is always better not striking.

Most of these little beach towns and resorts are pretty tranquil and safe, Porto de Galinhas included. The beaches there are lovely. Take ajangada ride out to the reef pools. You'll feel safe.
I would advise being careful in Recife itself. I also second the recommendation to see Olinda. Another interesting place in Recife is the Olaria Brennard ceramic studio and sculpture park, absolutely unique.

Porto Galinhas

"The chicken's dark story"

The city is full of lovely galinhas (chickens): in the public phones, souvenirs, name of the stores, statues. However the name of the city has a darker story!
Porto Galinhas was first called Porto Rico (Rich Harbour). In these first days the city was mainly known by the extraction of Pau Brasil' wood.
In 1851 Brasil abolished slavery but Pernambuco had plenty of sugar cane plantations that needed plenty of workforce. Therefore, the owners didn't want to pay to workers so they continued to incentivate slavery. One of the harbours where more slaves were brought to was Porto Rico. The ships'owners wanted to avoid patrols so they chose this shores far from the city of Recife.
To hide the slaves they were put under chicken of Angola' cages. When the ship was close to the city the people used a password to warn everybody of the arrival of the slaves: "There are new chickens in the harbour". From these facts comes the name: Porto de Galinhas.

Porto Galinhas is mainly known by the beaches, the reefs, corals and pools. It is the base for the majority of the tourists that head to Pernambuco. The city itself is quite uninteresting. One or two streets full of souvenir stores in a town with poor houses and no historic buildings. Although a very touristic place, beaches are not that crowded and even the city is quite relaxed. Beaches are excellent with warm water, nice sand and a relatively nice landscape.
