Porto Galinhas

"The chicken's dark story"
The city is full of lovely galinhas (chickens): in the public phones, souvenirs, name of the stores, statues. However the name of the city has a darker story!
Porto Galinhas was first called Porto Rico (Rich Harbour). In these first days the city was mainly known by the extraction of Pau Brasil' wood.
In 1851 Brasil abolished slavery but Pernambuco had plenty of sugar cane plantations that needed plenty of workforce. Therefore, the owners didn't want to pay to workers so they continued to incentivate slavery. One of the harbours where more slaves were brought to was Porto Rico. The ships'owners wanted to avoid patrols so they chose this shores far from the city of Recife.
To hide the slaves they were put under chicken of Angola' cages. When the ship was close to the city the people used a password to warn everybody of the arrival of the slaves: "There are new chickens in the harbour". From these facts comes the name: Porto de Galinhas.
Porto Galinhas is mainly known by the beaches, the reefs, corals and pools. It is the base for the majority of the tourists that head to Pernambuco. The city itself is quite uninteresting. One or two streets full of souvenir stores in a town with poor houses and no historic buildings. Although a very touristic place, beaches are not that crowded and even the city is quite relaxed. Beaches are excellent with warm water, nice sand and a relatively nice landscape.
