The three main islands in the delta of the Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers - Recife, Santo Antonio and Boa Vista - make up the city known as Recife, a modern capital of 1,500,000 inhabitants. It was named after the reefs (‘recifes’) that protect the palm fringed beaches. is the most popular beach. It is here one finds the best hotels, outdoor cafés and restaurants, as well as modern condominiums. The Dutch invasion of Recife in 1630 and their 30-year occupation can still be seen in its architecture, folklore and people. The Olinda a few minutes from downtown Recife, was declared a World Monument by Unesco. It is one of the best kept historical sites in Brazil. During the Holy Week, Nova Jerusalém a small town 185 km from Recife stages a Pageant of the Jesus Chist. The entire population of the town takes part. It is the world’s largest open-air theater, and spectators go along with the performers from one station to the next.
Instituto Brennand - S. João Castle
by solopes
A fabulous collection of historical weapons, presented in a castle with a very well elaborated display. The furniture, pictures and decorative elements are very well integrated giving to the collection a softness and delicacy that smooths the aggressive character of the items, and the density of its richness. Photo is not allowed inside, and that's my only complaint.
Pottery Brennand - The Garden
by solopes
Most of the best work of Brennand is exposed in the garden. Clearly obsessed by erotic shapes, there's a touch of Dali in some of the "crazy" compositions. The Taj Mahal is the central volume, and the fountains and walls frame it very well.

I lived in Casa Amarela, a bairro in the north of the city for 6 months whilst teaching English at Britanic International IH in 2001 - it is an amazing city, although perhaps not essential for a tourist. Living there, however, is a mind-blowing experience...
