Does anyone know anything about this hotel or it's location? Is it a luxury hotel? Is it central to the main parts of Florianopolis? I am not familiar with the best area to stay while in Floripa and would really appreciate it if someone could tell me where the best and most happening areas are to stay and if they know anything about this hotel. We are in our early 30's. Thanks again for your help!

Joinville is a separate city between the cities of Curitiba and Florianopolis. When tourists talk about vacationing in Floripa, they usually mean the island of Santa Catarina, just over the bridge from the city of Florianopolis. The area of Barra de Lagoa (on the island) seems to be popular with young tourists because of the nightlife. The island has a lot of beaches, each worth a visit. I would suggest you get a good guidebook like Lonely Planet or Moon or Let's Go, which include maps and suggestions for accomodation by price in each location, to become more familiar with the area.

Thank you for your response. After I submitted my posting, I realized that Floripa is not as small as I had guessed. I believe the areas I want to visit are North and East Florianpolis, right? Wwe are two couples in our early 30's who like good hip, fun crowds. The problem is that we are going to be there Feb 18-22 ...right during carnival so every site I could find for hotels is sold out during that time.
Any suggestions? Thank you!

I have no idea what you mean by the terms north and east Florianopolis. Joinville is, as I said, a separate city at some distance from Florianopolis, not just a suburb.

Here is one list of accomodations I found online. If it says Florianopolis under the Municipio column, those beaches look to all be on the island of Santa Catarina. They all have phone numbers listed.
(For example, Praia da Rosa, which is in Imbituba municipio, is about an hour to the south by car.)

Here's another list of accomodations, also with phone numbers, for the island beaches and the city:

As you are finding out, at this late date, most anyone wishing to stay at any popular location in Brazil for Carnaval has to expect to pay more and work very hard to locate something; someone not local, or without local connections, and who doesn't speak Potuguese may have to work harder still, pay more and take the first thing that comes along, regardless of price or quality, and without quibbling--or have extaordinary luck. I wish you the latter.

Thank you for the links. I am going to go check them out. As you stated, we are getting killed in regards to the accommodation fees! I guess it's a lesson learned...It's not always great to be spontaneous. Thanks again.

Travel Tips for Florianópolis

When talking about beach...

by luciano

When talking about beach resorts in Brazil, Florianopolis (capital of the state of Santa Catarina, in the island of the same name) is not mentioned too often. I know that it is very popular among tourist agencies in Argentina, at least.
The island has marvelous beaches, being the most visited Canasvieiras and Praia dos Ingleses. But an 'undiscovered jewell' I recommend is Praia Brava, a small isolated beach located on the northeast side, between the other two. I don't know if it remains the same now, after more than 3 years, but it was off the beaten path then. This picture was taken in Praia Brava; at the same time that it was 'rush hour' in Canasvieiras.

Joaquina Beach

by LucyInTheSky

People in Brazil and travellers who've been to Joaquina say that it's the most beautiful beach in Florianopolis. And it's not only ideal for sports but also perfect for family holidays, bring your children, come with friends, have a rest on the beach, the nature is amazing, the water is really clean, transparent and there are restaurants around, bars, nightclubs, all you need for a wonderful vacation.

A small beach located between the beaches of Daniela and Jurerê. On the shore that comes after the beach, the Fort of São José da Ponta Grossa was built in 1740, an impressive fortress which was restored in 1992.

"bemvindo a Floripa!"

Florianopolis is the Capital of the State of Santa Catarina, and today is considered Brazilian’s Best Capital for Living (due its great Life Quality) the violence and poverty levels here are really reduced. The island’s first inhabitants were the People from the Azores Islands a group of Islands that belong to Portugal and its known for its fishing and agriculture. The population of Floripa (the nickname for the island) has also German and Italian in its origins.

Here we have 42 beaches and we have surf on at least 20 of them. Because of its varied coastline there’s almost always rideable surf somewhere. The best season for surfing is winter, from about Mid- April to Mid-November when consistent waves break with rare flat conditions or small days between swell upcoming.

There’s also good nightlife, with the womem population overcoming men’s by far. During summer the tourist invasion make traffic worse and acommodations full, the waves tend to be smaller even though it ‘s the place with best Surfing conditions in Brazil during this time of year (except from Fernando de Noronha, a small island further North).

"surf's up"

BREAKS in Florianópolis

The Island has more than 20 breaks where you can find good waves in almost any swell direction and wind condition. The East part of the island has the best and most famous spots, even though you can find excellent waves on both North and South Sides depending on the conditions. The roads have all proper indications and everyone knows the spots. There are few spots where during the Mullet fishing season where surfing is forbidden, ask locals to be sure about it.

Praia da Joaquina

One the best and most consistent wave in the Island. It is the capital of surfing in Southern Brazil, handles almost any swell, but the best conditions are
E swell with NE wind or W wind. The famous left breaks from behind the Pedra da Careca, a small rock which stands close to the left side of the beach. On good days there’s some really long and powerful waves with several sessions. If you go further south down the beach there’s always good surfing spots with good lefts and rights.

At these points the crowd factor and hassle are reduced. Locals surf on the left side more often. If you’re here in Florianopolis you HAVE TO surf at Joaquina.Opened during Mullet fishing season.
