Florianopolis' Beaches
The big draw in Florianopolis is its beaches, and they are first rate. On the north end of Santa Catarina Island are a series of calm, idyllic beaches. Unfortunately, these beaches draw hordes of families and are crawling with tourists. If you don't mind all the people, Daniella is probably the best of the north side beaches. On the east side of the island, are similarly idyllic, white sand beaches. The most popular of these beaches, at Barra da Lagoa, is similarly packed with tourists. Like tourists everwhere, these tourists are predictable and lazy. Unwilling to stray far from the comforts of the beach bars and beach vendors, and too lazy to walk far down th beach, few end up more than a few hundred yards down the beach from each other. Because Praira da Barra da Lagoa merges into a 14 km stretch of beach known as Praira da Mocambique, it's easy to escape the throngs of tourists by simply walking down the beach. There is some surf here, but it isn't overwhelming. The most popular beaches with the bold and beautiful are probably Praia Mole and Praia Joaquina, both of which are south of Barra da Lagoa. On the south end of the island is some well-preserved colonial architecture at Ribeirao da Ihla. Although the beaches aren't as nice here, in many ways this is the prettiest spot on the island.
