Travel Tips for Atibaia

Go to the top of the world! Pedra Grande!

by fmekhitarian

20km/12.5mi from Atibaia, in the Serra do Itapetinga nature reserve, is the Pico da Pedra Grande (1450m/4755ft), the highest peak in the commune. From the summit of the hill there are fantastic views over the six neighboring communes, and in recent years it has become popular with hang-gliding enthusiasts. It can be reached on the Pedro I Motorway (km61/mi40).

PS: Be careful.Driving up there can become very steep. Make sure you know how to drive manual transmission . Try renting a jeep if possible.

Trying to Reach the Pedros Grandes

by klarson

Nearby Atibaia is a place called "Pedros Grandes" ("Big Rocks"). Basically, it's a pile of big rocks on the very top of a mountain. Being adventurous, we decided we could drive up there and take a look at it. However, it quickly became apparent that this road was designed for an SUV, not a compact 2WD like we had!

Occasionally, we had to stop to examine the road to see if we could go any farther. Eventually, we got to a point where we decided it was not safe to continue. Also, a summer thunderstorm was quickly brewing in the distance.

Once we realized we could not go any further, we decided to at least walk around a little and take some photos.

There was a little creek running nearby.

I thought these clouds were pretty cool looking!

On the way down, I got this shot of the rain in the distance in the valley below.

This lake was at the bottom of the mountain. It was raining by this time, so we stopped under a bridge and I took this shot.
