Commuting from GRU to CWB
by kwink
I'm looking to get from GRU to CWB (Curitiba) via train, since the air-fares are absolutely unaffordable. Is there a line betweeen these cities, and if so, where is it in relation to the airport and is there a web link? Must tickets be purchased in advance here in the States, and or, about how much are they and how long is the trip?
Thanks,
kwink

There are very few passenger trains in Brazil, but the comfortable buses go everywhere. You should check the main Brazilian bus site, ANTT, for route details (sorry, don't have time to do so for you right now), but here's a link that tells you how to get the details you want:

Many are not set up to reserve online, particularly with non-Brazilian issued credit cards. Buses leave from the bus station (rodoviaria) and not the airport, so you will have to get the shuttle bus from GRU.
Happy travels.

There is a good bus service that connects the two cities. I assume you will arrive to Guarulhos airport. So first you have to take a shuttle bus service that links Guarulhos to the bus station (rodoviaria) Terminal Tietê. There is one every 50 minutes and the price is R$ 28. The trip can take between 20 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the traffic.
At the Terminal Tietê you buy the ticket to Curitiba. There are hourly buses to Curitiba and the companies are Cometa and Itapemirim.

Both have quite good buses. If you are going to travel over night (as I did several times), take the 'leito' bus (sleeper bus). It has very comfortable seats which recline into a bed. The trip takes 6 hours and usually it is not necessary to book in advance.
Boa viagem!

The price for the Itapemirim bus from Sao Paulo to Curitiba was R$ 72 (December 2007).
Travel Tips for São Paulo
Devotion to Saint Jude Thaddeus
by Elainehead
Patron of Desperate causes, Saint Jude Thaddeus is very popular in Brazil. I've been here twice to thank Saint Jude Thaddeus...
His feast day is on October 28. If you are in São Paulo on that day, there is a big celebration at the church. There also is a shop there, so you can buy candles and souvenirs.
The easiest way to get there is by subway. The nearest station is "São Judas". As soon as you get outside, continue on your right side of the sidewalk (I think it's one or two blocks from there).

CAMPOS DO JORDÃO. It is a small leisure city in the Mantiqueira mountains, 2,000 meters above sea level. This city has a cold, dry, very pleasant European-style climate. DISTANCES: 167 km from the city of São Paulo, 342 km from Rio de Janeiro and 586 km from Belo Horizonte.
Airport transfer
by Lady_Disdain
"How long does it take to get from Congonhas airport to Guarulhos airport?" (or the other way around) is one of the most frequent questions on the São Paulo forum.
The answer is (drumrolls please!): it depends.
If there is no traffic (late at night) then it takes around 40 minutes. If it is rush hour, get confortable because traffic will be very heavy: it will take more than 1.5 hours. At other times, probably around an hour.

From centre, go to the Japanese neighbourhood of Liberdade, then down to vila Mariana, Parque do Ibirapuera perhaps back up to the Avenida Paulista!
You'll get the flavour of how diverse this metropolis is!
