Study Abroad-Sao Paulo ou Rio de Janeiro

by cariocaoupaulista

Like the title says, I'm planning a semester abroad before I graduate. My options are either Fundacao Armando Alvares Penteado in Sao Paulo (FAAP) or Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-rio).

I was hoping someone might have some opinions about the social life at either of these institutions or the general area that either is situated in (FAAP is dead center in the middle of Sao paulo and PUC-rio is in Gavea.

Anyon?
Alguem?

obrigado

Hello, I can tell about FAAP location, very nice and rich neighborhood in Higienópolis. It´s in central area, near to these places:

Shopping Higienópolis (http://www.patiohigienopolis.com.br/)
Mackenzie University (http://www.mackenzie.br/)
Pacaembu Stadium and Soccer Museum (http://www.museudofutebol.org.br/)
Besides, it is pretty close to Av. Paulista.

FAAP has a beautiful building and they are very engaged in arts and culture. I visited some interesting exhibitions there.

Good Luck!

I would recommend you FAAP.
São Paulo is a better place to study, but that depends on your major too.
if you have some more questions you can send it to ligiamast@yahoo.com.br
I studied in USP, but I am glad to help you, maybe you can tell me somethings about american universities.
Cheers

Travel Tips for São Paulo

know why you want to visit SP....

by TWINE

know why you want to visit SP. For getting an impression about Brazil, it is certainly the wrong place.
Take your best friend (and/or a lot of books) with you when you come, otherwise you will be very, very lonely. I was there during the carneval season and missed it!!!

A CAR IS YOUR LIFE IN SAO PAULO

by RafaelTheSecond

Specially if you live in distant neighborhood, a car is absolutely necessary, and thanks god the roads in São Paulo are excellent, but as in any big city (Hallo Montreal!!! HALLO LOS ANGELES) the trafic is packed!

This day my cousin Isabel was taking my mother to see her new flat in the city centre!

We were in my car where Marcio Omatsu took the picture!;)

We were driving in the Avenida Ayrton Senna!

Honor given to our great Formula One pilot Ayrton Senna who died in Italy in a Grandprix!

All kinds of food, you name...

by dropunder

All kinds of food, you name it, we have it!
Try visiting a traditional italian restaurant, and a brazilian restaurant, you won't be dissapointed.
Food from all around the world Look for someone selling hot dogs, and buy one, you could never imagine someone could put so much food between two slices of bread.
Go to a 'pizaria' and buy any kind of pizza, you will find it hard to taste another pizza like that.
But food is pretty much good everywhere here.

THE BEST LITTLE OLDFASHIONED FRENCH EATERY IN TOWN

by schurlif about LA CASSEROLE

This place has tradition, it's been there since over 50 years and that's a long time for a Sampa restaurant..... Its stylish but unpretencious decor doesn't quite fit with the formal rigor of the maîtres.... On the other hand the waiters are very friendly, unformal and quick....
Wouldn't hurt if they played some typical french music, folklore or chansons as background mood maker.... But I won't complain because this is another favorite of Camila and mine.....
She has the bad habit though to always order the most expensive stuff of the menu.... and last time she ordered just one glass of wine ( some 150 ml ), U$ 45.....
Well... I love french food and Camila..... So what am I supposed to say.....? Drink, Baby, drink.....

BTW, I noticed that most of La Casseroles clientel are upper high middle class elderly couples, all dressed elegantly, slightly arrogant, nose up in the air..... even though I really couldn't find anything very special about them.... Did I overlook something...? Probably, I only look at Camila....

BTW, in 17 days it will be 5 years since we're together...... 23rd of June 2002..... Both Camila and I are foie gras nuts... It is served warm ( Camila ) and cold ( the way I like it )...
I also love the duck with mushroom sauce and Rösti potatoes, while Camila ordered giant shrimps over safron rice last time... she was a bit disappointed though... the portion was small ( for that price !! ), she was hungry and ate like a good girl but when she tasted my duck breast and the sauce she went : mmmmmmmmhhh!!!! and stole my plate leaving me with her shrimps... they were pretty good but didn't tickle my taste buds very much... Camila meanwhile with that special glass of wine and some pieces of excelent fresh french bread cleaned up my ex-plate sighing with bliss and delight...
To top the pleasure I ordered Coupe Vaichiçoise ( or something like that, lol...) as dessert.
Camila brushed off my calorie bomb until she tasted it too... Again, mmmmmmmh... but this time I held on to my Coupe... But I let her taste at will... She had actually never eaten anything like ithis...
On top a rich portion of whipped cream, below a layer of delicious firm chocolate mousse and below that, ground floor, out of this world sweet chesnut puree made from authentic french chestnuts...

Yes...... sigh......
